The Statesman Hotel is an establisment that offers our guests a "Home away from Home atmosphere"

The Statesman Hotel is a Canberra institution and has been serving local, interstate and overseas guests for more than 30 years.

Statesman Hotel
Yesteryear
The Statesman has been a Canberra icon since the 1960’s.
Before the Club scene came to Canberra, The Statesman sold “a lot of beer” back in its day and became a popular meeting place for patrons from Parliament House and other Public Service Offices in the growing suburbs of Canberrra City. It was frequented by journalists, politicians and public servants in a booming political era. If the Statesman walls could talk there would be many a political scandal.
The Statesman still retains memories of its unique political charm with original artwork and room names.
Renovations to the Statesman where officially opened by Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1986.
Motel Manager Michelle Hood is keen to preserve the Statesman heritage with its political and social past by collecting stories of past guests and patrons in a visitors book available from the reception desk. Alternatively you can email your thoughts to [email protected]

Nowdays
The Statesman Hotel is a traditionally styled hotel-motel located in the geographical centre of Canberra.
Being a smaller establishment of 64 newly renovated motel rooms in one of Canberra’s leafy central suburbs we can offer personal friendly service in comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
The Statesman hosts two bars. Firstly the Terrace Bar and H2O Bistro featuring fine wines and fine food and of course our public bar / sports bar where our tradies and punters meet to enjoy the full TAB facilities, watch the games, and enjoy meat raffles every thursday evening.
(Permit NoL ACTR 14/00011)
Our Drive through bottleshop is also a favourite destination for our locals with all the benefits of Local Liquor pricing complemented with a large range of fine wines and boutique beers.

We had stayed here prior to the renovations, and the location is perfect for our visit. However, the new check-in system is a disaster.nWe were travelling, and had intermittent service, so the various emails and SMS messages were less than helpful. Nor were the various telephone calls we made between booking and arriving at the Hotel. When we did arrive, we couldn't find the allocated room, nor could the only human we could find a very helpful bar attendant. She helped us hunt, up and down various sets of stairs while we lugged our luggage along, but to no avail. The manager was called, and while we waited for her to arrive, another lost guest also stopped at the bar trying to work out how to check in and find his room. Finally the manager showed us to the room. The directions signs had not been updated to reflect the new numbering system!nThe room was fine and our dinner was delicious, but we won't be returning. We prefer to deal with a live human, not be bombarded by misleading text messages sent by a robot.nSorry Statesman, not everybody lives via their mobile phone.
We had lunch at The Policy. I ordered the little bites barramundi with chips and salad. My friend ordered the chicken parmigiana. Both meals were fantastic. The fish was tasty and the chips were cooked fresh. The parmigiana was the best i had seen in ages.
This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in! The rooms actually aren’t bad but the digital check in system and lack of receptionist is an absolute disaster!nnNeeded to stay here for 2 weeks. The first time checking in the link I was sent didn’t even work. Was forced to call a number the bar staff gave me to get a code to only my room. Absolutely no direction of where to go or where to park.nnThe next day our code on the door didn’t let us back in and were on the phone again and forced to change rooms. Skip ahead 4 days and yet again our code won’t let us in, and again we’re asked to change rooms. I’ve had sooo many emails and texts with room numbers and codes I don’t know which ones work and which ones don’t.nnThe amount of incompetence is astounding! I will never stay here again!
Great place. Check in was a bit doozy as number didn't work but a quick phone call sorted it out. Check out was simple, both digital only no receptionist. Rooms were great, clean and tidy. Private carpark for guests is good but still accessible via public door.
Came here for lunch. Staff at Bar were very friendly. I had heard mixed reviews of the restaurant. I had the prawn stir fry which was quite ordinary. Stir fry consisted of a lot of julienne carrot, a few thin strip's of red and green capsicum and a tiny bit of celery I think. A stir fry this does not make and at $32 + 2% card surcharge, it was way overpriced. Sauce lacked any real flavour. Disappointed.nFriend had the vegetable vadouvan curry with chicken. This was delicious, however the vegetables were few and far between, though lots of chicken.
