As a tourist in town for the first time, I naturally head to the main museum to admire the cultural heritage of a place. After this visit I am still not sure what it is a museum of. There is a section on First Nation art and heritage. And a section on the development of Melbourne including an example of a self-built cabin where in the 1850s poor settlers exchanged the slums of London for the slums of fledgling Melbourne. Little Lon it was euphemistically named. This proved to be the most interesting exhibition.nThe history of the earth and its ecosystems was pitched at 12 year old level and you would learn more watching a David Attenborough series. And what is the dinosaur exhibition all about other giving the kids something to gawp at.nSo many other exhibits were just nostalgic ephemera from the 1950s-60s; cinema posters and old TV sets?nBy accident I found myself on an outside terrace which has a pond where the kids can watch eels being fed but which turned out to to have a garden of indigenous plants with labels describing their use for food and medicine. Again interesting but not your usual museum feature.nUnless you have young kids to entertain save yourself the 18 dollar admission and head out to the National Gallery or State Library which have far more interesting exhibitions and are free.
We booked our tickets online which helped us skip the queue. Reached around 10 am when it was still quiet, though it did get busier as the day went on.nnMy son is very curious, and he thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the museum. The Dinosaur section was definitely a major highlight for him. The Rainforest section was another favourite - walking among real flora and trees inside a museum felt amazing!nnOther sections like bugs & insects, soils, and the Ice Age were equally fascinating. We spent about 4–5 hours exploring everything at a relaxed pace.nnWe had lunch at the Market Café inside the museum, which was quite convenient. Afterward, we enjoyed some time at the beautiful Carlton Gardens just outside - a perfect way to wrap up the visit.nnOverall, a fantastic experience for both kids and adults. Highly recommend spending half a day here!
Really interesting museum to visit, it worth the time, be aware that there are permanent galleries, plus the temporary ones, the temporary are at an extra costs. For the permanent, check our you times so you can have the best experience. at the nature one, in the roots section. You can find a moment of peace and guidance. Worth the look.
We went to this museum around 4:30 pm so it was free. Perhaps you are interested in the science part if you have children because it has many interactive activities and modern technology.nWe went to see some specific pieces so half an hour was enough. The park around is beautiful, specially in spring or summer.
We booked our tickets online when we got to the museum which helped to skip a long queue. The museum is very well organized and interactive; however, the aboriginal section was very disappointing - almost embarrassing in terms of content, and other sections were not so rich in terms of content. Our kids really enjoyed the children's gallery: that is def one of the most well thought parts of the museum, and our kids spent literally hours in there. Overall, a nice experience, but I was expecting something more content-wise.
