We loved this hotel. Everything about it perhaps with the exception of the shower. It was perfectly acceptable but wouldn’t win our best shower in hotel competition. Other than that, the hotel was great. We stayed in the Residence, which was quiet and private. We also ate in the restaurant and thought that the food was fine. All of the staff were friendly and polite. It couldn’t have been better.
Very sad to be writing, what is, a pretty negative review of our experience at Bistro 50 at The George Hotel. After enjoying many memorable experience over 20 years or more we had a very poor experience in October 22 and gave the Hotel our views in a private email we were assured measures were in place to improve both the food and service. We gave the Restaurant another chance on the 7th December but once again very disappointed. The only positive was the young man who served us, although woefully inexperienced, was very personable and really wanted to help. Food bland at best, green salad requested had to be reminded and on arrival consisted of 2 wilted lettuce leaves far too much dressing and several, what I assume. were pickled walnuts not what I would consider a green salad. Chocolate dessert, whilst it looked fine was very bland. Not sure how that happens. No light, or lower alcohol wine available and staff, over all, seemed lost and with out direction. Knowledge of wines and cocktails very limited. Asked for a whiskey sour staff had no idea and said they would look it up on you tube!!! No longer prepared to visit what was once our very favourite Hotel and Restaurant Rosalie Maxwell
Great hotel just on the outskirts of town next to the botanical gardens. Room was really well kept with all the amenities you may want. Turn down was a surprise and well received. Matt on reception was also super helpful with ideas for a walk into Christchurch.
We recently stayed at the George in Christchurch while touring the South Island. The rooms were lovely, location great, right near the park, and we used the bicycles, free of charge to pedal around this cycle-friendly city. Mostly I'm writing to recognize the wonderful staff at this hotel. They were friendly and helpful from start to finish. Our flight home was delayed 2 days and they made an extra effort to accommodate us. In particular, Charise Martin the Front Office Manager, was always helpful, efficient, kind and smiling. Thanks for making our stay so pleasant!
Room pleasant overlooked the car park., but great size and very clean. Had a bar meal was advised by staff that meals were ending at 21:30. And bar would be closing shortly after, although bar menu said they were open till 11pm. The Friday night staff seemed eager to get off. One customer asked for an espresso martini told ‘we’ve just cleaned the coffee machine at 21:10’. Another guest advised us we were lucky as they closed even earlier the day before. When did bar staff start dictating their own hours. This is not making money for the board of the George!
This superb hotel is probably my favourite place to stay in Christchurch. Perfectly located on a quiet street next to Hagley park, but still close enough to the city centre action to be convenient the service at The George is impeccable: friendly, helpful and professional. The bank of EV chargers for both Teslas and standard cars easily makes this one of the best locations in the city to stay. The restaurant has a selection sumptuous dishes on the museum and the rooms are immaculate. Highly recommended!
A wonderfully comfortable hotel. We were in room 206. Great customer service. Breakfast was good. Dinner was nice and tasty.Rooms: 5/5
My partner and I have never stayed in a hotel like this before, so we though we are on holiday let's book a night just for the experience. I cannot express in words how amazing every aspect of our stay was. We were greeted warmly with smiling faces, the check in process is quick and efficient. One of the team members showed us to out room took our bags for us and explained how all the lights and aircon worked. The room was beautiful, well laid out. Came with a shower with two seperate shower heads so no need to worry about temperature. A bath that all shapes and sizes would fit in and happily enjoy. Stunning views of the garden and a coffee machine. The attention to detail with the little things was something I really appreciated. Little shower bursts that dissolve in the shower, they smell amazing and help you relax ,little bath salts with lavender to enjoy and after dinner chocolate and water set beside the bed. The dinner service and food was to die for. My steak was a wee bit under what I normally like and I was half expecting just the steak back but no, my whole plate was redone it looked perfect, again no word just every aspect was spot on. We have felt so spoilt on our stay. We highly recommend any couple looking for a night or weekend escape to come here. You will be looked after from the moment you walk in, it makes you feel so special and relaxed. We will definitely be coming back and honestly we are counting the days. Thank you for an amazing stay
Wonderful high tea experience with great staff service. Our waiter in training and others were very obliging and made us feel very satisfied and not rushed. Would recommend
We had a terrible room 503, was a lovely room but no view, the curtains were closed for a reason when we got in there. We did change to room 502 which had a view as long as you looked over the roofs, not down into the car park or straight in front of you, which was staff accommodation. We were given a free tea & coffee for our inconvenience. You can make them in your room so no real compensation. Check your room first, that's my only recommendation.
