Our shop supplies most essentials and our friendly staff can assist you with any queries about the area.

There are many short and long walks starting at the Whakapapa village and most are sign posted and easy to follow.

Please be prepared as mountainous weather can change drastically so come prepared.

Asked a question about Tongariro Alpine Crossing. And the old man pretty much demanded me to wear and rent their hiking shoes. As I told him I'll be doing the hike in runners which was just fine and many others did the same. He also said it was up to our shuttle driver. Made it seem like if I didn't get those shoes I wouldn't be allowed to do the hike. The bus drive did not care at all! You do NOT need hiking shoes to do the hike!

Great place! Very friendly and helpful staff. Sites are good with lots of privacy. The amenities were clean, even with the rain and number of people moving through. One of the best set up kitchens I've been in during our 6 weeks. There are plenty of cook tops, equipment and sinks. It is busy but well set up so you still have room to cook. $45/night, powered, 2 adults.

Great campground. Not alot of room for tents but it had a nice kitchen and bathroom area. Free showers and some free wifi!

Nice and quiet, lots of camping spots and options, but the tent camping is at odds with the RV camping, because we were asked to move our car several times so RVs could leave, so not the most well laid out campsite. The kitchen was clean with everything you need to cook and seemed to be well managed. Friendly reception with lots of info and a shuttle service to the start of the crossing. Would likely just get a powered RV spot next time, to save us the trouble of using a meager tent site.
