I just finished a wonderful stay at the Shangri-La Sydney. I booked through Amex FHR, and the entire experience from check-in to departure was just incredibly warm and welcoming.nWhat really stood out was the staff—everyone had a genuine smile on their face, and you could tell they actually cared about your stay. The reception team was proactive and upgraded me to a higher floor, which gave me an absolutely stunning harbor view.nnA few highlights from the stay:nLunch at Altitude: I used the property credit here, and it’s worth it for the view alone. You get a perfect, unobstructed look at both the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The service was great, too.nnThe Breakfast: The spread is impressive, but the fruit selection is what blew me away. It’s rare to find fresh cherries, mango, and lychees all available at a hotel buffet.nnThe Little Touches: The turndown service was a lovely surprise, occasionally leaving fresh fruit and chocolates in the room.nnIt’s those small, thoughtful details and the kind service that made the trip so memorable. I’d definitely stay here again next time I’m in Sydney.
I recently stayed at both the Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney and the Park Hyatt Sydney during my trip, and while both are beautiful properties, I personally felt the Shangri-La offered far better overall value for the price.nnThe Park Hyatt is undeniably luxurious and its location right on the harbor is hard to beat. The rooms are elegant and the property has a very exclusive feel. However, considering the nightly rate, I expected a bit more in terms of attentiveness and overall service experience.nnAt the Shangri-La, the service stood out immediately. The staff were consistently warm, proactive, and accommodating throughout the stay. From check-in to housekeeping to concierge recommendations, everything felt efficient and genuinely welcoming. The views from the rooms were also fantastic, and the overall experience felt comparable in comfort and quality to the Park Hyatt—but at a much more reasonable price point.nnIn terms of value for money, it’s hard to justify the significant price difference when the Shangri-La delivers such a high level of service and comfort. If you’re deciding between the two and care about getting the most out of what you pay, I would absolutely recommend the Shangri-La.
Good, could be betternLet me start by saying I am so appreciative of all the hard work of the staff, you can see the hotel is extremely busy and congested and they are working very hard. They are amazing.nYou can’t get any better location, the bed is to die for and rooms are lovely.nHowever we are 3 nights into a 5 night stay at the Shangri La, a hotel which we chose for its luxury to celebrate a special occasion which I asked for a special something for the room, which never arrived , but the amenities and service could be improved. We have had to either call reception or go down in person with an issue every day since we have been here. I think it’s due to a lot of miscommunication between teams rather than poor work as the staff work very hard.nnFirst was the alcohol given to us in the room, which was a lovely gesture but we don’t drink for personal reasons and asked for an alternative which they refused to offer anything other than sparkling water- which doesn’t equal a Moet bottle. We even asked for some soda which was refused. We also have asked for the alcohol to be removed multiple times to no joy.nnSecond the rooms in the hotel are stunning but seem a little tired, we’ve moved rooms once due to the standard. Small things like empty toiletries and safe breaking, stain on the carpet, dirty hot tub, inconsistent shower temperature to the point of being scolded. AllnMinor and not a problem but not up to standard for the prestige of a 5 star. Room service was amazing and very reasonable price wise- lovely treatnnBecause of the inconvenience we were kindly given a complementary breakfast, which we were told by breakfast staff that they had to charge us, and go down to reception to fix, another inconvenience. Breakfast also incredibly busy with lots of dirty tables not cleaned.nnWhilst things go wrong, and we don’t expect perfect, we do expect when staying in a known luxury hotel to not have to keep chasing things to be fixed, as unfortunately instead of exploring this beautiful hotel and city we seem to be spending a lot of time waiting for things to be sorted.nWe’ve stayed in 4 hotels this trip, all 3 and 4 star with us saving to treat ourselves with the shangri-la and honestly the 3/4 stars have been better especially given the hefty price tag.
We had the pleasure of staying at the Shangri-la for our wedding. The room and the view was exceptional and the staff were amazing. They were very generous and left us a beautiful message, balloons, cake and Champagne when we got back on our wedding night. What an amazing treat. We also hosted drinks for the wedding at the Blu-bar and the staff were fantastic and kept the wedding party fed and watered whilst we were getting our photos. Just a wonderful hotel and highly recommend, particularly if you are celebrating something special! Thanks Shangri-la team.
If you don't have a car, keep in mind that it's quite a climb from Circular Quay—lots of stairs. I’d suggest driving or taking an Uber.nThe room was spacious and comfortable, as you’d expect from an older hotel. However, the furniture felt more 'dated' than 'classic,' and for a 5-star hotel, I found the cleanliness to be a bit lacking.nBut the view is truly unbeatable, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge right in front of you. The breakfast was also a standout—much better than other 5-star hotels I've stayed at. A special mention to the F&B staff and concierge; their service was exceptional even during busy hours.
