The Avonhead Tavern and One Good Horse Restaurant

We dined at Avonhead Tavern and One Good Horse on the evening of 10 March 2026, and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a lovely young lady named Charley, who immediately made us feel welcome. She asked if we’d be dining as well as having drinks, and when we said yes, she suggested we sit in the restaurant area and led us there with a smile.nCharley brought over both the drinks and food menus, took time to explain them clearly, and mentioned the evening’s specials in detail. Her approach was friendly, genuine, and full of enthusiasm — she really seemed interested in making sure we had a great night. After bringing our drinks, she checked in to make sure everything was to our liking, and again once our meals arrived.nWe both had steaks, which were cooked perfectly to our preferences — tender, full of flavour, and served with generous portions of French fries, a fresh salad, and delicious sauces. We happened to visit on a Tuesday steak night special, which made it excellent value as well.nThe atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and a little quirky, with subtle touches reflecting the horse-racing theme that gives the place its character. Overall, we couldn’t fault the food, service, or setting. A special shout-out to Charley, who really stood out for her friendly attitude, attentiveness, and professionalism — she helped make the evening something special. Highly recommended!

I had the lamb shank as the daily special, which was so tender. The rosti served alongside was perfectly crispy and delicious. We visited on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was very busy, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation in advance.

The place is spacious with plenty of room, and parking is super easy. I also love that it stays open late. I happened to try their Thursday special — a $35 ribeye steak — and it was amazing. The steak was huge, cooked medium just as I ordered. The outside had a nice char, but the inside was tender and flavorful. I asked for the chips to be crispy, and they came out perfectly crunchy and delicious. I definitely want to go back and have it again!

Arrived to a table set out nicely. Downhill from there.nnService was erratic- seemed the quiz night was more important than anything.nHad to ask for water for the table.nnWaited an hour for entrees- bread came out then a long wait for the other entrees to appear.nNo side plates offered- no serviettes- 8 entrée plates just plonked down.nnMains were ok - the chef special was pork belly. No crackling- the crackling had been removed from the meat!nBok choy was the star of that meal.nnThe steaks were good sized & coleslaw delicious.nnParmigon chicken looked like it had been reheated , dark brown and dry.nnThe ribs were excellent, small portion for ribs but good taste- the towels for finger cleaning appreciated.nnNot asked at all if we wanted more drinks all night- water not replaced so went to bar to get replacements ourselves.nnNot offered desserts- we waited then had to go ask if we could have desserts- cheesecake was chocolate with strawberry- it was a chocolate cake type thing - no strawberry just a puff of canned cream.nIce cream sundaes were great.nnOverall for spending just on $500 we won't be returning to the Avonhead One Good Horse.nParklands OGH is far superior for food, service, cleanliness & atmosphere.

Nice ambience. Game night so there were quite a number of people there to watch the match. We ordered our drinks but they took a long time to come and no one came to take our order for the food. When the waitress realized she was very apologetic, quickly got us our drinks and took our food order. The garlic bread was served quickly. Our mains came in good time. Taste wise the garlic bread and chowder are good. Find the pork ribs average and will not order that again in future.
