Royal Perth Hospital

Story

Royal Perth Hospital is a 450-bed teaching hospital located on the northeastern edge of the CBD of Perth, Western Australia.HistoryThe Hospital traces its history back to the first colonial hospital which was established in a tent on Garden Island, just off the coast of Western Australia, in 1829. In June 1830, the hospital tent was re-erected in Cathedral Avenue, Perth. From 1833 a more substantial colonial hospital operated for a short time from a rented room in a private house. Six years later, in December 1840, this was re-opened in a building formerly used as stables on the corner of St Georges Terrace and Irwin Street. The Hospital commenced operations on its present site on 14 July 1855 and was formally named the Colonial Hospital. In the years since, the Hospital has been known variously as the Perth Public Hospital, the Perth Hospital and finally, from 1946, as Royal Perth Hospital.FutureInitial plans in 2005 were to close down operations at RPH in response to opening of Fiona Stanley Hospital; however, the Western Australian government's South Metropolitan Services have changed plans since. The main campus on Wellington Street will retain its role as a major adult trauma centre and centre for complex surgeries. The Shenton Park campus (a tertiary rehabilitation centre) has closed down and rehabilitation services moved to Fiona Stanley Hospital.FacilitiesRoyal Perth Hospital is the largest hospital in WA, employing over 6000 people and seeing over 70 000 patients each year. Some of the services offered are imaging, trauma and neurosciences, a wide variety of surgical options, critical and emergency care, dermatology, internal medicine, haematology and many others besides.

To Whom It May Concern,nnI would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible nursing staff who took care of me during my stay at Royal Perth Hospital.nnIn particular, I would like to thank the daytime nurses Leanne, Dybia, and Tincy, Christineas well as the night shift nurses Ash Grad, and Jessie Grad. Each of them showed exceptional professionalism, patience, and kindness. Their calm manner, prompt assistance, and compassionate support made a difficult time much more manageable and emotionally comforting.nnI also want to thank Chris, a 28-year-old Curtin graduate who looked after me in the Emergency Department. His quick action, clear communication, and caring presence left a deep impression on me and truly exemplified what it means to be an outstanding nurse.nnThank you all for your dedication and the genuine care you provide to patients like me. It made a real difference in my recovery.nnWarm regards,nn24 April 2025
I am absolutely disgusted! Now the Oncology dept was wonderful and saved my brothers life decades ago. But he is in there now and I am absolutely livid! The Dr’s requested a nurse to be with him 24/7 but the head of the Ward usurped this at least twice from what I’m told due to “staff shortages” I am heartily sick of hearing about staff shortages throughout all the hospitals! But he needed a nurse because he’s very unwell and was not allowed to get out of bed. Well, as no one was with him he was desperate for the toilet and tried to go by himself twice! Both times he’s collapsed but the second time he hit his head badly and due to THAT has two bleed’s on the brain! That was two days ago and now my brother is fitting and it looks like he had a stroke last night at some point! The Dr’s were going to induce a coma and put him in ICU last night but two hours later they were still deciding whether to do that or put him in palliative! Then this morning we hear they did neither and they’re still trying to decide! That is HOURS and HOURS after the initial sezuires! He is now fitting again and has been for hours and they’re doing nothing! Apparently he has to stop having seizures before they can do anything!??????????nI am absolutely disgusted by the lack of any of the right things being done or the help he needs not being given and would never recommend RPH now to anyone! My brother is an unwell man off and on but this neglect looks like it’s going to kill him!!!! I am so angry!!! The lack of “staff” excuse is not good enough and it’s costing lives!!!!!! Gutted and horrified!!!
I've travelled all over the world with business and life and having to come to Perth Royal Hospital was an unexpected semi-emergency but the staff have been nothing but outstanding. I understand the health system is under pressure but this system was just absolutely fantastic. Everyone was very, very helpful.
The wait times at ED is absolutely horrendous. Despite being a first-world country with some of the best doctors and medical equipment, it is unacceptable to wait over seven hours just to be seen. The staff themselves are not the issue—they work tirelessly under immense pressure—but the system is completely broken. With Western Australia’s population continuing to grow, these delays will only get worse in the years to come unless urgent action is taken. Patients deserve timely access to care, and the current situation is far from acceptable.
I am writing to share my concern regarding my recent visit to the Emergency Department. It was my first time attending, and unfortunately, the experience left me quite disappointed. Despite the nature of an emergency service, I had to wait more than seven hours before receiving care.nnI understand that hospitals can face high demand and limited resources, but if beds are already full, I feel it is not reasonable to keep patients waiting in long queues without alternative options. During my wait, I was also informed by nurses that some patients may even need to wait over twelve hours, which is very concerning.nnThe term “Emergency Department” suggests that urgent and timely care should be a priority. Extended waiting times not only cause distress but also undermine the very purpose of emergency services. I strongly believe that patients deserve a system where timely support is guaranteed, even during peak times.nnI hope my feedback will be taken into consideration so that future patients may receive the level of care and urgency that an emergency setting should provide.
