Royal Perth Hospital

Story

Royal Perth Hospital is a 450-bed teaching hospital located on the northeastern edge of the CBD of Perth, Western Australia.HistoryThe Hospital traces its history back to the first colonial hospital which was established in a tent on Garden Island, just off the coast of Western Australia, in 1829. In June 1830, the hospital tent was re-erected in Cathedral Avenue, Perth. From 1833 a more substantial colonial hospital operated for a short time from a rented room in a private house. Six years later, in December 1840, this was re-opened in a building formerly used as stables on the corner of St Georges Terrace and Irwin Street. The Hospital commenced operations on its present site on 14 July 1855 and was formally named the Colonial Hospital. In the years since, the Hospital has been known variously as the Perth Public Hospital, the Perth Hospital and finally, from 1946, as Royal Perth Hospital.FutureInitial plans in 2005 were to close down operations at RPH in response to opening of Fiona Stanley Hospital; however, the Western Australian government's South Metropolitan Services have changed plans since. The main campus on Wellington Street will retain its role as a major adult trauma centre and centre for complex surgeries. The Shenton Park campus (a tertiary rehabilitation centre) has closed down and rehabilitation services moved to Fiona Stanley Hospital.FacilitiesRoyal Perth Hospital is the largest hospital in WA, employing over 6000 people and seeing over 70 000 patients each year. Some of the services offered are imaging, trauma and neurosciences, a wide variety of surgical options, critical and emergency care, dermatology, internal medicine, haematology and many others besides.

To Whom It May Concern,nnI would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible nursing staff who took care of me during my stay at Royal Perth Hospital.nnIn particular, I would like to thank the daytime nurses Leanne, Dybia, and Tincy, Christineas well as the night shift nurses Ash Grad, and Jessie Grad. Each of them showed exceptional professionalism, patience, and kindness. Their calm manner, prompt assistance, and compassionate support made a difficult time much more manageable and emotionally comforting.nnI also want to thank Chris, a 28-year-old Curtin graduate who looked after me in the Emergency Department. His quick action, clear communication, and caring presence left a deep impression on me and truly exemplified what it means to be an outstanding nurse.nnThank you all for your dedication and the genuine care you provide to patients like me. It made a real difference in my recovery.nnWarm regards,nn24 April 2025
It was a year ago. I was almost dead. Some were brilliant. To the surgeons who put the filter in me and removed it. I loved the humour in the theatre I believe if you can make jokes you’re very good at your job. I’m not sure but I think a nurse said to me in ED almost like it was certain “you’re not going to die I can see how much fight you have in your eyes”.
I just wanted to post this review as a thank you to all the lovely doctors, nurses, students, and general staff working at Royal Perth Hospital. Even though I thought they would dismiss me and tell me I was being dramatic as by the time I had arrived at hospital my abdominal pain had gone from a 7 or 8 to a 2 or 3 they never did. When a ultrasound couldn't find my appendix I was admitted and sent for a CT. I was visited by three wonderful doctors, had a lovely registered nurse named Rachel, and chatted to all the kind people moving me about the place. Even though I've been sent home with no diagnosis and just asked to monitor my pain, they truly did listen and try to find the cause of my pain.nnI will say that the hospital is clearly old, understaffed, and does not have enough beds. This means everyone is pretty busy and doing their best to keep you comfortable while not having enough time. I know the government is planning to update the hospital, and that does appear to be needed, however, more beds are very much required. A lady in the ER with me had been waiting for 8 hours to be seen, and that just isn't good enough not the hospital staffs fault, however.nnAnyways, thanks for making my stay around 16 hours to be an experience that wasn't awful, which, unfortunately was my expectation. I actually had fun at some moments I've never had a CT before so that was honestly very interesting. Thanks for listening!
We’ve been waiting in the emergency department for over two hours for what should be a relatively simple procedure — a possible stitch for a thumb injury. While I understand that emergency departments can get busy, the lack of communication and updates from staff has made the wait even more frustrating.nnIt’s difficult to watch someone in pain with no clear sense of when or if they’ll be seen. We expect and appreciate the hard work healthcare professionals do, but better management of time and patient expectations would go a long way in improving the experience.
We would like to share our recent experience at Royal Perth Hospital. While we have always held the hospital in high regard, we were deeply disappointed by the way we were treated by a clinical nurse at the discharge lounge following a complex ENT surgical procedure.nMy husband underwent a major ENT surgery on Tuesday, 10th June 2025, which unfortunately led to complications. He was discharged on Thursday, 12th June, and we were directed to wait in the ENT discharge lounge around 12:00 PM, expecting the discharge process to be handled with the awareness and attention it deserved. We assumed, understandably, that the staff were informed of his medical situation and would manage the process accordingly.nHowever, after patiently waiting for nearly five hours, we noticed that the pharmacist—who was supposed to explain the discharge medications—had finished her shift and left. Concerned, we approached a ENT registered nurse and asked, “Did you forget about us?” To our shock, she replied, “Oh, I didn’t realise you were waiting for the pharmacist.” When I explained that we had been waiting for five hours following a complex surgery and if she knows what happened to my husband? the ENT Clinical Nurse's response was both dismissive and hurtful: she asked, “Why should I know your husband’s situation ' which was very unprofessional, and she further said, “If you want, you can just leave and collect the medications from any pharmacy.”nThis response was deeply upsetting to both me and my husband. As a clinical nurse, we expected her to have at least a basic awareness of the patients under her care, or at the very least, show some empathy. Rather than acknowledging the oversight, she further stated that we should have approached the desk earlier, effectively placing the blame on us. What made this even more disheartening was that in the entire five hours we sat in the lounge, not once did either the clinical nurse or the registered nurse checks on us or ask if we were okay.nThat said, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the PCA staff and the cleaning staff in the discharge lounge. Their kindness, in offering us drinks and snacks, did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated during a stressful time.nWe shared our feedback with the doctor on duty, who kindly listened and showed genuine concern, for which we are grateful. We feel strongly that the particular clinical nurse involved in this incident needs to reflect on her approach. Nursing is not just a job—it is a profession built on compassion, care, and understanding. We hope that she comes to recognize the profound impact a nurse can have on a patient’s healing journey, especially in critical hospital settings.
