BirdCare, in Greenbay, are good at taking care of sick, injured birds. I've taken a few native birds in over the years. They could do with more voluntary contributions of donations, which helps take care of the birds, either a money donation or frozen bags of mixed veges, like peas, corn, carrot..
Took in baby Blackbird Friday. Monday morning, I drove back to check on him because they were not answering phone calls. They said he was euthanized because he was blind. I don't think he was blind he looked out the front of dog carrier during transport. How would he know front to back if blind?? Was really hoping he would recover in their care, and I could release him back to his mum, who's still looking for him in my backyard. So sad. I think they may be overwhelmed there and probably pick and choose what birds to use their resources on to save. RIP sweet baby bird.
I usually come here I dropped maybe 3 birds off before, no problems, but one morning I came to drop a bird after I found it legless outside my daughters school, it was like 20 minutes earlier then the open time but the lady there tried to accuse me of opening the gate to let myself in. But it was open when I arrived. When she made a fuss I told her I would have just left the bird outside the gate if that was the issue, she then said no don’t leave it outside the gate. ????nNo way in hell I was taking it home, I have 2 dogs & 10 puppies I couldn’t risk it.
My cat brought me a baby pigeon but in perfect condition so I called Bird are Aotearoa and a friendly staff member answered the phone saying just bring the bird. When you arrive you have a sense this is a special place . Everybody is volunteers and there is a vet on site daily. They really are passionate about helping the birds and you see that. You can give a donation if you want but its not compulsory. There is also an option to be a volunteer yourself. what a special place worth supporting and make sure it gets the funding they need to take care of the bird life. If you find a bird in need please take it to Birdcare Aotearoa and give the birds a place to heal recover and set free. So happy that too see that small at of kindness to birds go along way. Thank you for doing an amazing job.
Have been twice within the last month ! The setup is incredible and you really feel they know what their doing. Definitely worth the drive, if you're worried about a birds health. Noting tho that apparently Eastern Rosellas and Lorikeets are considered pests in NZ and can't be cared for shock!
