Found an injured bird and kept him/her overnight in my house. The next day I took it to BirdCare Aotearoa, smooth experience. The vet nurse/vet was compassionate and I felt comfortable that it was in good hands.
BirdCare, in Greenbay, are good at taking care of sick, injured birds. I've taken a few native birds in over the years. They could do with more voluntary contributions of donations, which helps take care of the birds, either a money donation or frozen bags of mixed veges, like peas, corn, carrot..
I used to be very grateful for the services of BirdCare Aotearoa. I could take a injured or unwell bird there and feel confident that they were equipped and prepared to help. I volunteered there when Lyn McDonald who helped to set up Bird Rescue was at the helm, and thought she set a tone of solid, sensible compassion. Since early this year, though, the switch to native bird only has changed the organisation from an animal welfare entity to yet another offshoot of DOC. I think people took birds there because they felt compassion for a suffering fellow creature, not because they were motivated by invasion biology ideology. At the time of the change there was apparently going to be support for non-native birds over a period of 'transition', but I don't think anything eventuated. Very, very disappointing.
My cat brought me a baby pigeon but in perfect condition so I called Bird are Aotearoa and a friendly staff member answered the phone saying just bring the bird. When you arrive you have a sense this is a special place . Everybody is volunteers and there is a vet on site daily. They really are passionate about helping the birds and you see that. You can give a donation if you want but its not compulsory. There is also an option to be a volunteer yourself. what a special place worth supporting and make sure it gets the funding they need to take care of the bird life. If you find a bird in need please take it to Birdcare Aotearoa and give the birds a place to heal recover and set free. So happy that too see that small at of kindness to birds go along way. Thank you for doing an amazing job.
Disappointed by the lack of compassion and responsibility.nnI contacted BirdCare Aotearoa about a suffering bird on my doorstep. Since it wasn’t native, they refused to help, only saying a vet might euthanize it. The response felt cold and dismissive.nnLife shouldn't be valued based on species. If they lack resources, they could ask for donations or support, not turn away a helpless creature.nA little empathy and action could have gone a long way.nnSadly the bird has passed away!
