We recently visited Sydney Children’s Hospital for my son’s regular checkup, and once again, we were extremely impressed. The staff were warm, welcoming, and highly professional. From the moment we walked in, everything was well-organised and efficient. The doctors and nurses took the time to explain everything clearly, making sure my son felt comfortable and at ease throughout the appointment. It’s always reassuring to know he’s in such capable and caring hands. Grateful for the outstanding care and attention—we truly feel lucky to have this hospital looking after our child’s health.
We brought our baby to the Children’s Hospital in Sydney emergency department at night. We waited for around six hours. While delays can happen in emergency care, what we witnessed in the waiting area was completely unacceptable and deeply disturbing.nnThere was a cigarette butt on the floor, and a huge dead cockroach left lying in the open - in a pediatric emergency department. This is not only a serious violation of hygiene standards, it is a clear threat to the health of vulnerable children who are already in a weakened state. Many come in with infections, fevers, open wounds - as did my child - and to expose them to such filth is nothing short of negligence.nnThis level of unsanitary conditions shows a lack of basic responsibility and care for the safety of patients. It is alarming that such a facility, meant to protect and treat children, cannot maintain even minimal cleanliness in its waiting areas.nnI would like to thank the doctor who finally treated my child - their help was appreciated. But the hospital’s management must be held accountable for the disgraceful state in which patients are received. This experience raised serious concerns about the standards, oversight, and priorities of the hospital.
I kindly requested access to the restroom while we were working at the hospital, but the male receptionist was very rude and informed me that they do not allow people to use it because it is a children's hospital and they want to maintain cleanliness. As a mother, I found the children's restroom to be much dirtier than any public bathroom I have used outside. Denying someone access to these facilities in the name of cleanliness suggests that there should be a greater focus on hygiene.
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional care we received at Sydney Children’s Hospital. The medical and nursing staff there were compassionate, professional, and responsive, providing timely and appropriate care that made a significant difference in my son’s treatment. I am deeply grateful for their support and expertise during a very stressful time.
I was admitted here from CHW probably because I was about to be 16 very soon. My admission was to the mental health unit, Saunders Ward, and I spent a short while in there. SCH being situated in the eastern suburbs meant there'd be predominantly caucasian staff, although there were a lot of ethnic staff as well so I felt a little less isolated.nFunny thing was that same year there was a sudden influx of Irish teachers at my school, and when I came here, there were so many Irish nurses as well!nThis was my experience in the MHU:nnPros:n-It was only me and another pt, so less overwhelming and I had many things to myself.n-An allied health staff left art supplies out in the common area for anyone to do art, which I was so grateful for. That same AH staff member also said I could get more supplies from their stash if needed, as long as I asked the nurses.n-It was a nice-looking ward. I was told by the clinician back at CHW it was newly built. Everything seemed nicely maintained.n- Mealtimes meant more supply of paper cups, plates and bowls I could decorate and do art on.nnCons:n- Food was your typical hospital food; not the best but some options were more favourable than others. I liked the meatballs and the pasta bolognese.n- I felt as if one of the AH staff had something against me as most interactions with them were awkward and felt forced.n- One of the nurses came off as rude, but I only met them for one shift and never again. I also felt as if *they* had something against me as well. Hopefully it wasn't to do with race.n- For safety, reasons, you are checked on regularly. This would feel invasive for some people.n- A number have been omitted since I don't want to share information that is too specific and should be private I'm not sure how private which is why.nnLastly, my time here was a memorable one, as I don't live in the eastern suburbs, so I was far from home. As I was driving home that evening when I was discharged, I was going westbound which is the direction the sun sets. I also encountered close-up plane takeoffs and landings, which added to the melancholic experience. While I didn't necessarily enjoy my time being under restrictions and constant surveillance, I definitely made lasting memories and a lesson overall that nothing is forever, so you should cherish everything before it's time to say goodbye.
