Had a full hip replacement at the Mater. The nursing community is absolutely outstanding. I also opted to do rehab after my surgery - best decision I made. The physios are superb. I cannot thank the team at the Mater enough. You all made my surgery and recovery journey so much easier. Thankyou
I gave birth to my daughter at the Mater and I have such a positive birth. It was a natural birth. My midwife Fiona was amazing, super supportive and helpful. My obstetrician dr. Hickinbotham was also guiding me very well and overall for first birth it was pretty quick and well guided. I received great care at the Mater, all midwifes that were taking care of us during our stay were great professionals, answering all my questions and concerns. Great professionals who obviously love their job. I would definitely come back to this hospital, I am so grateful for the great care we received I definitely recommend it to new mums. The facility is super clean and nice, the rooms are very nice too.
The care I received at the Mater Hospital for my left hip replacement under orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Robert Sew Hoy and anaesthetist, Dr Mark Egan was incredible. I didn’t get the booking clerics’ name but she was fantastic. Nadine and Suzanne in pre-op; Shiva the anaesthetic nurse I might be remembering her name incorrectly; Craig, the radiology wardie; the kitchen staff; and the physiotherapists, Jake, Alex and Emma couldn’t have been nicer, more professional or more encouraging. As for the ward nurses, Grace, Dominique, Krisann and Faye, they were berating me for not giving them more work to do and asking them for more help! They are all wonderful nurses. Everyone was just so unbelievably nice and helpful. It’s incredible to be home, relatively pain-free on minimal pain relief after less than 48 hours following a total hip replacement. It’s a testament to Dr Sew Hoy’s and Dr Egan’s expertise. Everything about the Mater was outstanding. Thank you all so much.
Gave birth to my first baby at the mater. Don’t recommend it if you’re planning to mix feed or formula feed. Place has sad private equity vibes. Potentially take your own if you don’t have a choice. The midwives kept pressuring to continue breastfeeding and withheld giving formula until Bub ended up being dehydrated even though I kept saying I have low supply and they wouldn’t help settle the baby either. Low supply was later confirmed by a private lactation consultant at home. Didn’t think I’d spend the first week of my baby’s life crying for him to be fed but here we are. One of the midwives later told me that management doesn’t let staff distribute formula due to cost, but seem to be more than happy to come around asking for donations for renovations of the room anyways. Total clown town. Have lodged a formal complaint a while ago and she’s been predictably ignored.nOn the bright side, food was very good.
Had a knee surgery done at the mater and spent 1 night and 1 full day. It was a very positive experience all around! I was treated with kindness and respect every step of the way. Even during the night when I rang several times for help, every nurse was extremely patient and gentle with me. The food menu was also extensive, serving many options. They also allowed my mother to stay the night in the room with me and gave her a bed with blankets and pillows. If you are having a surgery done here, do not worry they take such good care of their patients. It was really clean and comfortable, and thank you a million times to Lillian, my nurse, who was incredible during my entire stay!
