In 2011, having recently moved into the area, I attended a class at this yoga centre. It was a deeply uncomfortable experience. 

The beginner's room was very crowded and so we were asked if there were any volunteers to go into the main room. I volunteered. In the main room, the teacher called out instructions to the class in a way reminiscent of a military training course rather than a yoga class. Plank! Cobra! Plank! It was unpleasant and stressful - not at all what I had experienced at other yoga centres. 

During the class, a second person (I believe to be the owner) was shouting across the room at the attendees about their memberships and whether they were paid up, and other comments. She shouted at me, asking me who I was and where I had done yoga before. After a while, she shouted the same questions to me again, and also shouted that I lacked discipline in my poses. I was humiliated. I was a beginner student. I told her that I was not enjoying the class. She then shouted at me that I should collect my money and leave, and that I should find another school that will accept someone without discipline in their poses. 

This exchange occurred in front of room full of people. It was stressful, unnecessary and completely unprofessional. I was shaking. I collected my belongings, received my refund and left. I cried in my car - I couldn't believe what had just happened. I did not return. 

Today, as I was browsing Google Maps for a yoga centre nearby, I saw the Balwyn Yoga listing. I noticed that another patron had described a similarly bad experience and wanted to add mine, for the record.

I have been going to this centre for the last 7 years and never regretted my being part of it.  My body misses it when I'm not able to do the Iyengar yoga stretches.  It's a different yoga, it is a form of Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture  and breath control .  It increases my mobility, strength and stability.  Perhaps it's not for everyone, but highly recommended for those who thinks Iyengar yoga is for them.  Thanks Inga, Larry, Carla, Ingrid and Mark for your patience with us all.

I had been taking classes here for a few months, but had to miss my regular class one week for an unexpected surgical operation. I let the owner know in advance but, when I tried to return, was told that I had forfeited my membership and would need to pay for another 5 weeks before I could resume. I was rudely accused of lying, and the term 'retard' was used pejoratively during the conversation. 

My impression was that the owner was trying to get more money out of me, and the conversation was awfully confrontational and stressful. If you are looking for a relaxing, friendly place to try yoga, I strongly recommend trying elsewhere.
