3.5 Good hostel for what you're paying for, good free wifi but only for one device and a really great location. However our room and hallway smelt awful and the kitchen wasn't very sanitary. Beds and curtains definitely need to be upgraded. The bathrooms and showers should be cleaner. Overall a good hostel for brief and cheap stops when backpacking but not a pleasant environment to stay.
The deluxe room was comfortable and the staff is friendly. Unfortunately, the common area is very small and not clean enough. There wasn't enough essential things such as bowls and plates! Hard to make friends in a hostel where the living room is so dark and unfriendly!
It is what it is: a hostel for backpackers. If you're staying in the dormitory style rooms, it's cheaper but funky. Yes, squeaky beds. Yes, not perfectly clean. Yes, noisy at night. I heard the private bedroom accommodations are a step up, and many of them have their own floor to escape noise. For the price and location, not bad overall. The "free wifi" thing is a bummer 250MB doesn't do much, but there are other options nearby at coffeeshops/etc. The bar/restaurant downstairs is nice though. I'd stay again if on a budget.
The kitchen isn't big enough, but the rooms are decent. The location is great with a Woolworths across the street and minutes walk away from all the city shopping centers. The receptionist Zara was incredible, very nice and super helpful!
Great location but definitely a no frills hostel. Dorms and bathrooms are very basic but mostly satisfactory however the kitchen and common areas were cramped and dirty. There is a large commercial fridge located right next to the outdoor common seating area that emits a loud hum and luggage storage room is also extremely limited. Would recommend if you are looking for a well located place to sleep at night and not planning on spending much time on the premises.
I stayed here for 3 weeks. This was the cheapest deal I could find for $24 for a 4 bed dorm. Convenient location and there's woolies right accross the street. The room was really clean apart from the smell coming from the carpet. But it wasn't too strong. The kitchen was always clean and organised. The bathrooms looked old but they were always clean. I was able properly use only 2nd shower because the water from the other ones wasn't flowing out properly. The reception and the cleaning staff were really friendly. The internet is unlimited but i had to get a voucher from the reception of 250mb every time it got over. But sometimes the same vouchers worked multiple times. Overall my experience was good. Its the best I could get for $24. I would recommend this place for any backpacker.
This review is for the hotel, not the bar... Sorry, there is no true FREE WIFI... they give you a voucher for 250mb. Wish that was made clear on their site. The place for the most part was unkept and the laundry machines were grimey. The sheets were pretty soiled and old. Also, the staff just barges into your room without knocking to change your trash.
The location is good and the staff were very helpful whenever I had a question. Unfortunately, the beds were quite uncomfortable. I have stayed at a number of hostels with much better quality rooms and amenities for the same price.
This's to provide a hack for future fellow travellers to get around the cold showers. I really like Tassie Backpackers at The Brunswick so criticising it is like criticising a good friend, you don't really want to. I love the character of the old building, it gives you a taste of the old Hobart which is really nice and the lounge and rec areas are cosy, it's reasonably sociable, generally good people and vibe. Ok - so it generally has barely warm showers unless you get in early but the hot water runs out very quickly. I got lucky the first day and got actually consistent hot water which I never have there before, but the second day they were lukewarm at best and given there were two unexpectedly freezing cold mornings in Hobart, this would've been intolerable and I honestly don't know how people there do it. Two get arounds, one of which I'd resolved to do if I ever stayed there again and this happened is the Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre is 10 minutes walk east of there, easy to get to and for $2 non-swim entry you can have a warm shower, which I did. The second, which I discovered later that day, is that there are free showers on Level 3 of the car park of all things attached to the shopping centre with the Woolworths in it across the road from the Brunswick. If the hot water is next to nonexistent which it mostly is I *strongly* recommend one of these two options unless it's summer and hot as in the colder months the cold showers are just horrible. The only other thing is there are hardly ever any bowls in the kitchen which from what I observed is because guests pilfer them which really isn't cool. But not the fault of Tassie Backpackers, you just have to be prepared is all I'm saying.
Room was filthy and smelt. Toilets so grubby a cockroach wouldn’t be seen in them. Staff were friendly. Good beer and food. Hard to find entrance. Would come to bend the elbow but not to stay
