Some mechanics set you up for excessive and unnecessary charges from the minute you walk in the door and you can get a feel for it after a while. They shake their head even before they have seen your car. The Berwick K-mart tyre and auto is exactly this kind of mechanic shop. They tried to charge me $1300 for changing brake pads and rotors when I subsequently had another nearby mechanic do the same work with the exact same quoted parts for half the price. They tried to charge me $16 to supply and fit a $2 brake globe. I can change all my globes in about thirty seconds! They tried to charge me $67 for a wheel alignment that I didn't need. What I did pay for was a $220 "Essential Plus Service" and it wasn't really a service - it was really an oil change and tyre rotation. They didn't even top up the fluids which would have cost them about $5 maximum. They even gave me the traditional "don't go anywhere else because you might be risking your life" speech when I refused their prices and I hadn't heard that old chestnut in years. Mechanics like this exist to prey on people who don't know anything about cars. Save your money and look elsewhere.

They don't accept your own oil even though it's sealed and recommended by the manufacturer. When I said that my manufacturer service accepted my own oil at the last two services he called me a liar. I will never go there in the future. Not recommended.

Toby and his team at KTAS Berwick South are fantastic. I work in the shopping centre so very easy to drop the car off - and have used them from servicing, to new tyre purchases and alignment/balancing. A couple of times when the repair work has been very minor and quick to fix - they have done it for free . Just today I saw a great big nail in a tyre and dropped it off for a puncture repair. The nail had not actually punctured tyre, so they tested the tyre and put it back on the car and packed away the spare at no charge. Always friendly and helpful - cannot recomment highly enough.
