Heard so much about this place and finally tried it. Decor was very nice, clean and bright. Good service with an extensive menu.nnUnfortunately the food is below expectations. Had CKT with duck egg too salty, fried noodles burnt and fried chicken wings average.nnSaving grace was root beer with ice cream, brought back childhood memories...
We arrived at 11 am on a weekday, just as the restaurant opened, and thankfully got seated right away.nnThe food was served very quickly, and we were out within 30 minutes. By then, the place was already getting busy, so it's best to arrive right at opening time to avoid a queue!nnWe ordered the regular Penang Char Koay Teow and Penang Char Mee, both with less salt and no spiciness, as well as a lobak and spring rolls combo, and a chicken curry puff.nnThe highlight was the lobak and spring rolls. The chicken curry puff wasn't bad, but I wish it was crispier.nnOverall, we enjoyed our meal but will probably avoid the weekends for now since it still seems to be quite popular.
I have always wanted to dine at Kakilang after hearing so much about their char kuay teow CKT. So I was glad that they moved to Balwyn.nnOf cos I must try their signature dish during my first visit. I ordered the CKT with blood cockles. My friend ordered the dry prawn noodles and we also shared the friend chicken wings.nnI love the CKT and I was glad that there's an option to have it with blood cockles which is hard to find in other restaurants. There was wok hei and the portion size was just right. You get 3 decent sized prawns, cockles and some lup cheong in the CKT. Oh and not forgetting the fried pork lard that they put on top of the noodles. No complaints about the CKT, it was absolutely delicious.nnMy friend didn't really like the dry prawn noodle. She said that the sauce was a little sweet which she didn't like. Otherwise, the portion size was good. You get slices of pork, an egg, 3 decent sized prawns and fried pork lard.nnThe chicken wing was ok, quite ordinary in taste. It was freshly cook and that was great.nnTo order your food, you scan the QR code on the table and you can either pay through the app or pay cash at the counter. Under each item, there are options that you could choose like the level of spiciness, type of noodles etc. One thing I thought was funny on the order app was that for the CKT, there was an option for wok hei... LOL ... Shouldn't wok hei be a standard?nnThe restaurant is beautifully renovated and it's spacious. Parking can be a bit challenging depending what time arrive, as there are limited lots in front of the restaurant. Alternatively parking can be found at the side street or opposite the restaurant.nnStaff was friendly albeit forgetting to serve the tea we ordered.nnI'll definitely be back again for the CKT and maybe some other items on the menu.nnIf you love CKT, definitely do give Kakilang a try.
Lucky to have this CKT in the suburbs, on par with the most well-known city restaurants. It has the more hard-to-find ingredients like blood cockles and razor clams. Prawns tasted very fresh. There are customised spice levels from no spice to extra hot, we found it fairly hot compared to other Malaysian restaurants so would recommend down a level to your usual. Staff were friendly. Soft opening period so the entrees and drinks came out last, but I imagine this will improve as they finesse their systems.
I heard about a new Malaysian restaurant opening, so I went there at 11:08 AM, just 8 minutes after they opened at 11:00 AM, and it was nearly full! The food tastes good, and the portions are reasonable. I especially loved their currypuffs and various kueh. The chicken satay was also delicious, and the cockles were incredibly tasty. You must try their spicy char kway teow.
