After a tough hike up with only 1 view point along the way, we were rewarded with an epic sunset at the hut. Lots of river crossings slowed us down as had to take off boots and roll pants up to well above knee level due to the depth of the rivers. We knew it would be sketchy going into the hike but man it was muddy. Feet went completely under up to well-above shin level!! Would highly recommend taking a second pair of shoes if you do this hike. It’s also incredibly steep!!! We’re pretty fit people but the steepness was tough. Time 3:53 / 11:45km / 938m altitude gain Recommend: bring newspaper for starting the fire & tall skinny candles for the holders all around the hut!
Nice comfortable hut built 2010, with coal supplied fireplace. Great views, esp to the N-E. Info boards on site history. Walked in/out via Karaka Trk 13km; parts are fairly rough with very muddy sections. Info panels detail the history of the area.
It was a good hut but it was a bit dirty from others do it on a good day as the tracks can be quite muddy there are better huts
