Come with an open mind! Leave your city ways behind you. The bush walks and the fresh water is worth not having your eyes glud to your phones. The fresh air and just the views of the forest is relaxing. The showers have great water pressure and the long drop toilets aren't too bad. Nikki is the best host ever! She is always around, friendly to talk too and keeps the place looking beautiful! One of my favorite Christmas holidays ever!
Very friendly welcome from staff. Lovely woodland setting with river and nice walk. We stayed in our campervan for one night on our travels to The Coromandel, hoping to have a hot shower. After paying $30 for the night and an extra $2 each for a hot shower which was cold, was pretty disappointing. The overall settings were lovely and facilities were good/basic but we specifically went there for a warm shower between stops. So that is the reason for the three star review.
Overpriced and poorly maintained. My husband and I paid $30 to park overnight in an unpowered lot, and the spot was so muddy that our van was almost stuck trying to get out. The long drop toilets are old and filthy I think she uses kitty litter or something similar dusted along the thick layer of feces along the inside of the toilet in an attempt to neutralize the odor, and the chemical smell sticks to your clothing for days. Hot showers are $2 for 5 minutes only two showers for the whole camp and there is no light, so you can’t use them after dusk. I’ve stayed in a lot of paid and free campsites in NZ over the years, and this one had one of the worst cost-to-benefit ratios I’ve ever experienced.
Awesome camp very well run, showers need a little attention. But we had a great time. photo is overflow paddock
Visited in a motorhome with family of four. Idyllic campsite set in native bush alongside a lovely river. Pros’- Location, setting and nature. Cons’ - Website says you must book. Phone message says just turn up. They don’t respond to phone calls or emails. Campsite is not very well kept or organised, but it is idyllic. Only has 3 powered ‘sites’ with fluctuating power. You need to pay for showers $2 Coins and have smelly long drops. You must boil water for drinking and there is no dump station motorhome people All this sets you back nearly $60 a night. Come here for the nature and trekking and you will be fine. Just turn up with a full tank of drinking water and empty grey and black tanks if you have a motorhome. Oh, and don’t leave your shoes outside as someone stole ours in the night…
Awesome campsite in the forest. Alot to do without having to leave the camp. From glow worms, swimming holes and the beautiful hike to the waterful. We enjoyed it! Also very clean!
Great location next to a river but hot showers were not working, lots of areas blocked off due to ground conditions. 4 Dec 2022.Rooms: 3/5
Bad experience... the people who run it unfortunately are very negative in nature and ruin the experience which is horrible after traveling down from Auckland... worst new year experience in ages
Great place and vibes . It was my birthday and she gave me free snacks. Was an epic stay
Located just outside whangamata is this beautiful bush surrounded campsite. A department of conservation camping ground. We stayed at the overflow part which has portaloos and hot showers run by a $2 coin. There are bush walks that run beside the campsite and a glow worm walk. My favourite is the walk to the waterfall although it is hilly the waterfall is stunning. Located 10 minutes out of whangamata if you don't mind roughing it for a couple of days it's worth it for the peaceful surroundings and scenery. $18 pp per night
