Awesome experience. It was really busy though and you can only do guided tours so when the guide speaks other people talk over them so you miss a lot of information. I got lots of photos. I'm kiwi and I found it very touristy in terms of behaviour of others. My wife is Aussie and she loved it. She was totally impressed and would have enjoyed it more if the other tour people understood that in NZ you don't push in front of others and talk over guides. The gift shop has awesome stuff and great prices. Use the toilets inside the complex outside ones are paru.
Really was impressed with the Maori culture and traditions. Had read about volcano in school it's first time in 42 years of my life to visit a active volcano and hot springs. Will suggest to book the guide which is only 20$ difference from pack 1 guided red track and pack 3 yellow self walk trail. Git to tastes the hot spring water cooked corn really felt rich tastes and it was really tasted good. Guide was really superb and her way of explaining welcome to MY HOME. Lived it.
The Geyser seems to erupt every 20-22 minutes pretty much on schedule. You are almost guaranteed to be there for at least one eruption. We had a second visit due to the nature of our tour and saw an evening eruption along with hot chocolate. There is a nearby seating area but steam is escaping from beneath them so be wary of where you put your hands I seared one of my fingers before I realized what was happening. The steam itself, if it reaches you, has cooled by the time it gets to the barrier. This entire area is a demonstration of the fact Rotorua is on top of a massive Caldera in a volcanically active zone.
We were at the park when the geyser erupted and it was wonderful. Give yourself plenty of time in the park and make sure you can go back to the geyser after your formal tour has finished. Your formal tour is fixed to a schedule and the geysers are not. So if you want to be sure you see them erupting, allow three hours for your total time in the park.
Amazingly beautiful geyser, which I saw as part of the guided tour at Te Puia. I saw it during the day, and also at night. We even got hot chocolate in the evening. Very special to see. You can also get wet from when it is at its peak, and apparently, it is very good for the skin so ofcourse I embraced that.
