If you are looking for a bank which will help you handle finances while you run a business or work in vibrant Singapore, this isn't it. I opened an account with the UOB when we started our business in Singapore, and have had nothing but problems. Today, I am unable to pay contractors or do any banking...because the battery went flat in my token a month ago and after filling in forms in 2019, forms are all this bank cares about and countless phone calls...I still don't have my token. Apparently, a team in Singapore has been "manually processing" the form for the past 10 days. It's a two page form! We resorted to the cheque book we were given when we opened the account. But guess what - the bank dishonoured them as "obsolete" - despite the fact that no-one told us they were unusable. So we have had to resort to paying out of our Australian account - one bill for a few thousand dollars cost us $420 more because of the exchange rate. Last night was a great example of what this bank is like. All calls for internet banking went to a very nice but obviously confused gentleman "Clive from loans". I called twice to two different numbers, and poor Clive always ended up taking the call. I did ask if he was the only one home, but Clive couldn't tell me. He did say he was using using a practice called "best effort". Hmmm... Clive could only say he would pass on my request about the token and "maybe the team will call back in a few days...they are very busy. A few days! This is 2019 and my business is paralysed! Our attempts to rectify matters are met with promises of action. But nothing happens. So, in desperation, we have taken to social media. I'd like to think, after this someone would perform one simple act: post us the token, call us and tell us: "It's on its way". But we're not holding our breath. So if this sounds like the bank you would like handling your affairs in Singapore, good luck signing the myriad forms to open the account. After that, you're on your own.
