The Royal Women's Hospital

About

The Royal Women's Hospital is Australia's largest specialist hospital dedicated to improving the health of women of all ages and newborn babies.

Story

Each year, we care for more than 200,000 women from 165 countries, who speak 60 different languages and follow 42 separate religious faiths.

The Women’s is committed to a holistic philosophy of health and provides comprehensive services ranging from health promotion to clinical expertise and leadership in maternity services, gynaecology, cancer services and specialist care of newborn babies.

We are also a major teaching hospital and a medical research leader of world renown.

For over 150 years, the Women’s has led the advocacy and advancement of women’s health care.

Established in 1856 as 'The Melbourne Lying-in Hospital and Infirmary for Diseases of Women and Children', our hospital began as a place where ‘under-privileged women’ could give birth to their babies and receive medical attention and nursing.

Today, our innovative social model of care recognises factors such as housing, income and stress affect women’s ability to care
for themselves and their families.

The Women’s is a unique health service that has been shaped over time by women’s voices. We are an advocate for improvements in women’s health and well-being.

In developing our services, we understand the importance of integrating the diverse, ever-changing needs, priorities, perspectives and experiences of our women.

Mission

To provide quality health services that meet the needs of women and newborn babies; especially those requiring specialist care.

These services are informed by research and are provided within an environment of innovation, education and advocacy. The contributions of our employees, consumers, diverse communities and other agencies that share our goals are fundamental to our success. Our resources are committed to health services that are ethically, socially and financially responsible.

The mother of all hospitals — truly the best. Both of our children were born here, and the staff were kind, professional, and incredibly friendly. Ward 4 East and South were outstanding, admitting my wife multiple times and supporting her fully until recovery
The Royal Women’s was absolutely amazing! I had no idea what to expect as a first time mum and I was so pleasantly surprised by the service and professionalism of everyone working there. The midwives are truly angels who help you every step of the way and are so kind in some of your most vulnerable moments. I dealt with at least 10 different midwives and they were all professional. My midwife Alex, who delivered my baby, was incredible and she truly made the experience easy and relaxing. They are gems! I would recommend this hospital to anyone having a baby.
I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and recently had bleeding with severe pain. When I went to the Royal Women’s Hospital Emergency Department, they admitted me quickly and started treatment right away. I honestly can’t explain how amazing they were. They took such good care of me and helped relieve my pain. The nurse who looked after me was absolutely incredible.nnEven after I was discharged, they didn’t stop caring. Every week, I receive a follow-up call to check on my health. I’m truly thankful to the Royal Women’s Hospital for their outstanding care, kindness, and support during such a difficult time.
Amazing staff, and very experienced doctors and midwives. During busy periods there can be really long wait times, but when they get to you you have their full attention and they are very thorough.nnOnly draw back are the postnatal rooms - most of them are shared and don't allow support people after hours. This can be a nightmare for new mums who've just had a surgery, and are trying to learn to latch and care for a newborn. If the other baby in the room is crying, yours will wake up too. So it's a bit of a rough experience post birth - especially if you've had a cesarian or need to stay in the hospital over 2-3 days for any reason in a shared room.
I had a very positive experience here, when I unexpectedly went in for emergency surgery yesterday.nnAll staff were informative, friendly and nothing was too much of a hassle for them.nnI was very lucky to have my own room I know this is not common but I wanted to make note of itnnThank you to the wonderful women who looked after me during my short day and made me feel really cared for during an unexpected stay.nnThe information the pharmacist ‘s gave me about how to take my medication once I’m home was really appreciated.nnCan’t say the food was great, but that was the least of my worries x
