Story

The Crafty Squire (formally known as The Portland Hotel) showcases the experience, life and times of James Squire. The Crafty Squire offers the entire Squire range and is Melbourne CBD's only working micro-brewery producing handcrafted ales brewed on site as well as those brewed by the Malt Shovel Brewery.

The Crafty Squire is a place for beer lovers. It has everything from crisp easy drinking lagers to big hoppy craft ales with great traditional pub food to match. The easy going traditional pub environment and friendly knowledgeable staff make for the perfect beer drinking experience whether you are just in for a quiet pint or wish to learn more about the inner workings of an operational microbrewery.

Visitors can enjoy one of the The Crafty Squire's famous 6 beer tasting paddles with accompanying tasting notes and join one of our guides into the brewery itself to learn all about how we craft the beer from the grain mill to the tap.

The Crafty Squire's award winning original brews include; the Portland Pale Australian style Pale Ale; The Highwayman thrice hopped Red Ale; The Craic traditional Irish Stout and the Speculator robust hop heavy American Pale Ale.

The Crafty Squire is open from 11am every day except Christmas so those in search for good full flavoured craft beer will always have this little piece of beer drinking heaven to come to.

Good service, great food (both quality and quantity!) Any decent value. The selection of beers and corresponding tasting notes is great to try a few a different beers. Plenty of paid parking options around nearby. Will definitely be returning and recommending to friends.

Been here for Arsenal match and it was amazing experience. They have big space to accommodate quite a good number of people on two ends of restaurant, send to be good place for watching live matches. Crowd was great, team chantings and winning atmosphere. Beer collection here is Also good and sometimes they will have offers running like, you get 10-20% off if you are wearing the jersey of one of the playing teams :)

Awesome food. On the Friday we went there for office lunch they had $20 deal for main dishes which is excellent value for money. Food was tasty, serving size was big and service pretty good

Food was excellent but the service much to be desired. Most staff were friendly but our waitress seemed to forget about us. Being our anniversary it was important for us to enjoy our evening, but after making eye contact five times she still did not come to see us. We would have stayed the evening having dessert, coffee and cocktails but we thought we'd try somewhere else for better service. She lost out on what would have been a big tip. There didn't seem to be anyone overseeing the service in the place as if there were, they would have spotted us sitting for 15 minutes with empty plates and a further 10 minutes with no dessert menu. Bit of a disappointment.

Called and booked a table for 6pm. When we got there they either didn’t bother to reserve the table or the reserved sign got lost. When I asked at the bar they said ‘well if there isn’t a reserved sign with your name on it then the booking hasn’t been put through and we’re too busy to assist right now’. Great. I’ve been visiting this pub for years but I think there’s been a change over in management and there customer service and care factor is now zero.
