Everything was good. The standout dishes were definitely the focaccia and the anchovy on toast. The burger was pretty good as well. I was recommended the seafood pie, but it wasn't really to my taste. The steak was alright, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to order it again. The starters are definitely a great choice here.
Builders Arms Hotel, Fitzroy - 4.3 out of 5.nnThis is one of my favourite pubs in Melbourne.nnWe had the:nPumpkin Shahi curry accompanied with rice $28nCharcuterie board $24, how pretty is she!!nCheese burger $24nSteak $44nWhipped cod roe with flat bread $15nnFirstly, the flat bread is exceptional here. So so crispy and cut into small strips meaning you can just have a bite with the row every here and there.nnThe curry was very tasty, the roast pumpkin added a crispier texture and I loved the mix of herbs in there.nnI also have on good authority that Builders arms has one of the best steak nights in Melbourne, costing $25 on a Monday night with salad, fries, and chips.nnI loveeee how builders arms has all the different sections for every occasion. Want to go for a casual drink? Here’s some curb-side tables outside or the bustling public bar. The bistro area itself is gorgeous, so sophisticated with beautiful booths. The courtyard area is quaint and they even show some sporting events on a screen out here!nnOnly criticism would be that it is a bit spennier and that I think they could have a few more main course options outside of the grill section.nnOverall 4.3 out of 5.
We had a fantastic Christmas Party dinner at the Builders Arms in the private dining room. The level of detail and service from the team leading up to and on the day was impeccable. Food and drinks were fantastic. Highly recommend.
The Builders Arms Hotel continues to shine as one of Melbourne’s standout dining spots. Andrew O’Connell has once again delivered an exceptional experience, where top-tier food, outstanding service, and a welcoming atmosphere come together seamlessly.nnWe started with the sourdough and cultured butter, whipped cod roe with flatbread, and fries with aioli—all executed to perfection. The sourdough was crisp and airy, paired with deeply flavorful butter. The cod roe was silky smooth, rich, and beautifully smoky, complemented by warm, lightly charred flatbread. And the fries? Utterly addictive—golden, crisp, and perfectly seasoned, with a garlicky aioli that tied it all together.nnFor mains, we had the 250g O’Connor grain-fed steak, the half roast chicken, and the flathead special. The steak was cooked exactly to order, full of rich, smoky flavor, and paired with kohlrabi remoulade and pepper sauce. The roast chicken was succulent, its skin perfectly crisp, with heirloom zucchini adding a fresh contrast. The flathead special was light, flaky, and seasoned just enough to enhance its natural sweetness.nnThe sides— cos lettuce, heirloom carrots, and chopped broccoli—were anything but an afterthought. The lettuce was crisp and refreshing, the heirloom carrots had a wonderful roasted sweetness, and the broccoli, with mint, parsley, and freekeh, added layers of texture and depth.nnTo finish, the affogato was a simple yet perfect end to the meal, with smooth vanilla ice cream melting into bold espresso, and the option of a liqueur taking it to another level.nnService was exceptional—genuine, knowledgeable, and effortlessly attentive. The staff knew the menu inside out, offering thoughtful recommendations without being intrusive. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between refined and relaxed, making it a place where you can enjoy an elevated dining experience while still feeling completely at ease.nnIf you’re after outstanding food, warm service, and a venue that just gets it, the Builders Arms Hotel is a must-visit. Andrew O’Connell has once again set the bar high, and we’ll absolutely be back.
I cannot possibly give this more than one star. This is my first and potentially only ever Google review. $34 for the Parma only WITHOUT CHIPS OR SALAD is simply criminal. I was tentative to enquire about the option of chips being included and was aghast when I was told that- ‘No, you need to add chips for $10’ on top of your $34 purchase. This cannot be good for business and I sincerely hope that a thriving pub like this will do the honourable thing rectify this egregious error.
