This prominently located marble monument is the bust of Sir William John Clarke, set on a marble pedestal with a woman, representing the State of Victoria, offering a wreath and a young man, representing education, with a scroll. Clarke was a prominent colonist in the Colony of Victoria, a wealthy pastoralist, stud-breeder and philanthropist, who died in 1897 from a heart attack while stepping off a tramcar in Collins Street. His funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Victoria. The monument was built to memorialise the life and work of Sir William John Clarke and was unveiled by the then State Governor, Sir George Sydenam Cole, on 22 July 1902. After his pastoralist father died in 1874, Clarke inherited all the Victorian properties and became the largest landowner in the colony. As well as being one of Victoria’s top stud-breeders, and philanthropist, he was heavily involved in many areas of public life including the Victorian Legislative Council, the Melbourne international exhibition, the Melbourne Club, the Australian Club, the Royal Victorian Yacht Squadron, the Victorian Football Association, and the Melbourne Cricket Club. He was prominent in yachting and horse racing circles. Clarke also made many generous public donations to charities and appeals. He gave generously to the building funds for St Paul’s (Melbourne Anglican Cathedral) and to Trinity College in the University of Melbourne. Clarke was made baronet in 1882, by Queen Victoria in recognition for his many donations and for his presiding over the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880, becoming the first Victorian to be granted a hereditary honour.
