Sydney and Melbourne were first linked by telegraph in 1858 and subsequently by telephone in 1907. Then, in the five-years to 1961 and at a cost of £6.89 million, to increase telecommunications transmission capacity between Sydney and Melbourne and other centres, along its route including Canberra, a trench was dug between the two capital cities in which a coaxial cable was laid. This involved excavation of some one million tons of rock and soil over approximately 960 kilometres. In terms of both size and complexity, this was by far the largest work of this nature ever undertaken in Australia. Each pair of tubes of the 6-tube coaxial cable made it possible for over 1,000 simultaneous telephone and telegraph connections and the transmission of two television programs. It provided the first inter-city television transmission in Australia, allowing for the first time, simultaneous television broadcasting in Melbourne and Sydney. The two inch cable was buried at a depth of 4 feet at an average rate of 1.2 miles per day. It has since been superseded by competing optical fibre cables operated by firms such as Telstra, Optus and NextGen. The Coaxial Cable Memorial Plaque at the Gordon Reserve in Spring Street Melbourne was installed to commemorate the finish of laying this coaxial cable by Post Office line staff on 10 November 1961. The stone was unveiled on 19 November 1961 by the Postmaster General, Hon. C.W. Davidson O.B.E., M.P. The Sydney–Melbourne coaxial cable was officially opened on 9 April 1962 when the then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, made an interstate direct dial call.
