This statue commemorates Albert Arthur Dunstan who was born at Donald East, Victoria in 1882, the son of a Cornish gold rush immigrant. Dunstan was a farmer who entered politics and won the Legislative Assembly seat of Eaglehawk in the 1920 election and held that seat for some 30 years. On 22 April, 1935 he became the 33rd Premier of Victoria and was to become the second-longest Premier of Victoria (Sir Henry Bolte being the longest serving Victorian Premier). He was a forthright and effective speaker who was to become known as an unruffled political fighter and for his ability to make lightning assessments of the practical possibilities of any situation. The statue of Sir Albert Arthur Dunstan is one of 4 statues installed in December 1999 in the forecourt of 1 Treasury Place, the seat of executive government in Victoria and sometimes called Premier's Lane. They honour the longest-serving premiers of Victoria.
