The Bronze statue of Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-1870), erected in 1932 to mark the centenary of his birth, is located at Gordon Reserve, Spring Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia near the statue of General Charles George Gordon. It's on a sandstone pedestal and depicts the poet in his riding boots seated with a pencil in one hand and a book in the other, whilst his saddle lies beneath the his chair. Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-1870) was Australia's first poet of note and the first to capture Australia and her people in poetry, paving the way for Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson and William Ogilvie to create poetry that was uniquely Australian. Depressed and penniless, Gordon died after shooting himself on Brighton Beach on June 24, 1870. Inscription on the north side of the statue reads: 'Of the works of His hand by sea or by land, the horse may at least rank second' and that on the east side reads 'He sang the first great songs these lands can claim to be their own.'
