A great place for Chinese food. Many local restaurants and you can taste food from different parts of China. The street are tidy and nice. There usually have some celebration, the biggest one is Chinese new year. Lots of fun activities and traditional performance.
The street is the longest one among other states. Narrow and long. Less banks and mainly a food street and lots of Chinese restaurants. ⋯⋯Not pedestrian free.nYou could hear more Mandarin than cantonese tourists compared to other states.
This is the biggest and best Chinatown in Australia with the most amount of restaurants, Asian grocery stores, eateries etc. In the 90s it was full of heroin dealers but has been cleaned up a lot since then. There used to be a few pinball parlours on Russell St between Bourke and Lt Bourke where you could buy a point of smack for $20 but they have now been transformed into restaurants and grocery stores. There's a few interesting lanes which run off Little Bourke St and are worth exploring. The Exford hotel on the corner has $10 pints and a smoking deck on the 2nd level.
While Chinatown offers a taste of Chinese culture with its restaurants and shops, it felt similar to other Chinatowns in Australia. I missed a unique or local atmosphere that sets it apart. The stores mainly sell souvenirs, groceries, and trinkets, which wasn't quite the authentic experience I was hoping for.nnDuring the day there is a bit of a seedy vibe, but it really does come alive at night.
