Morell Bridge, is a beautiful old bridge that crosses the Yarra River at Anderson Street, South Yarra. It's great for cyclists and pedestrians as it connects the Olympic Park precinct and the Royal Botanic Gardens (Gate A) and makes it really easy to cross between Richmond and South Yarra. It was previously named Anderson Street bridge but because of his contribution to Melbourne, it was renamed in 1936 after Sir Stephen Morell, a prominent Victorian businessman and Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1926 to 1928. Morell Bridge, is historical and listed on the Victorian Heritage Register because it was built in 1899 and is the first bridge in Victoria that was built using the Monier reinforced concrete technique. I love the large dragon motifs over the three distinctive arches, the ornamental cast iron balustrades, the handrails, and the Victorian lights. I also love the cobbled bluestone gutters.

Quite apart from its undoubted aesthetic qualities, the Morrell Bridge has great historic value. It is one of the earliest examples of reinforced concrete construction in Australia, and was built under the supervision of (Sir) John Monash. A great Australian who went on to command the Australian Corps in France in WW1, developing the mobile warfare tactics that finally broke the deadlock of trench warfare. After the war he returned to Victoria and played the lead role in the establishment of the state's electricity grid.
