What a great tour! Jean was brilliant with the explanations of how things worked and the stories to go along with it. Definitely a must do, but also give yourself time to wander as well
Absolutely worthwhile to see and to venture through the many historical hallways of the old parliamentary building. To be standing in those very rooms where many decisions were made that shaped the Australian democracy was great. Allow some time to go through the entire museum and the many exhibitions it provides on two floors. Advisable to take water with you. Ample accessible toilets in every corridor. Courtyard cafe is also available. Tickets are not required as entry is free. Getting there is relatively easy and whilst ample parking is available, it is unfortunately at a cost. A great history journey!
Visited Canberra for the weekend. The Old Parliament House was the first place we visited. It is preserved and decorated pretty well. I felt like I was living in history. Some rooms have background voices playing to recreate the atmosphere of past times, which was a nice touch. Especially if you love politics, you will be further amazed.nnThere is also a play area for kids. My daughter would have spent all day there if it were up to her.nnIf you do not know Canberra, parking is easy here easy in general in Canberra. It is free for the weekend and metered during the weekday. You can still find 1p/2p parking spots in the area.
Wonderful displays, very interesting and well put together. Unfortunately if you want to see either of the chambers, it is wise to check the website calendar as both were closed for the 3 days that we were in town.
Old Parliament House is free to enter and has free 45 minute tours running throughout the day. The tour was really worth doing and we found it informative and interesting. You can sit down in the members seats in the House of Representatives or the Senate. My favourite part was the party room office and the Prime Minister’s office and Cabinet. It was like walking back through time with Bob Hawkes office, tv monitors, packets of cigarettes, ash trays, typewriters, Cabinet room, seventies bathrooms and was really great and well done. Well set up for kids of all ages and very interactive. Highly recommend.
