Islington is a very special luxe hotel in Hobart, a blend of contemporary and period architecture and stunning landscaped gardens against a backdrop of magnificent Mount Wellington.

Built in 1847, these intimate lodgings showcase the property’s original glory, updated to include the little necessities and amenities our forebears overlooked, such as a glass enclosed mountain-view pavilion and a cellar stocked with the finest Tasmanian wine.

The hotel public spaces and suites alike feature fine art and antique furnishings. Islington appeals to those who desire the very best in life, personalised service delivered in an atmosphere of serenity, luxury and tranquillity.

The Islington Hotel has been such a pleasant place to stay for our trip to Hobart. It’s a beautiful grounds which makes you feel like you’re out of the city, with a stunning garden with great views of Mount Wellington. We had a garden room and it was stunning waking up to the view of the garden. The hotel its self is very nice, built from Sandstone and immaculately decorated. The room was very spacious. It’s very well located, close to everything, but as I said feeling like you’re not in a main city. Breakfast was delicious and the dining room has glass walls with a great view and a fireplace that is always lit. The staff were amazing and attentive. Marc was always available to our every need. I’d highly recommend it
This was our first visit to Tasmania and staying at the Islington was a highlight of the trip. The service is outstanding, and the room extremely comfortable and clean. The whole place has a lovely Victorian era charm. You can relax around the grounds and there is plenty of room to sit and relax outside of your room. Breakfast everyday is a must as the food was amazing. They’re also currently updating the furniture and decor which will just make it even better. We loved our stay, thanks! Nearby activities: Mt Wellington, Cascade Brewery, Salamanca Markets, Hobart city, MONA all close by Noteworthy details: Car hire a must
Spent 2 lovely nights at this hotel on the outskirts of Hobart. Highly recommended! We had a splendid room that was very big and comfortable. The bathroom was also huge and had a nice, warm floor. Each day we found in the room complimentary sweets, while each night a tea set was put on our bed so we could prepare a relaxing tea before sleeping. Outside there were also a couple of chairs to enjoy the hotel's pretty garden. The hotel was built in and around a beautiful historic villa. Everything is super elegant and gives a nice feeling. Loved also the breakfast area with the big glass windows that let lots of light in. In terms of location, you probably need a car to get there since it's further away from the center. They have private parking but even outside of the property you could simply park on the side of the street. Breakfast was very good: a few things like muffins and pastries were available as buffet, otherwise we could each order a hot or cold dish from a little menu we had at the table, which would be freshly prepared.
We’ve stayed at the Islington a few times now, and love it on each occasion. The gardens are beautiful and the facilities are cozy. The service is particularly great, as it feels like a much more expensive European experience. Mark particularly is lovely. We regularly recommend it to friends as it sums up a trip to Tasi.
Such a beautiful hotel and wonderful service. Breakfast was fantastic and the view made me feel so excluded even though we were on the outskirts of town. I can imagine throwing wonderful parties here and just enjoying the gorgeous building and decor. Photos don’t do it justice. The only challenge was the room temperature would not lift past 20degrees - in the middle of winter with giant windows to a beautiful garden! I was purposefully staying to work remote a few days - which meant spending my days in the room desk was suitable, hair was comfortable, yet an ice cold room all day and all night was very uncomfortable. Staff were kindly accomodating for last minute meetings before and after check out times, to which I am very grateful. Overall phenomenal hotel, I am certain they will resolve the ice box issue in due time.
Everything was excellent, including the view, room design, and friendly staff. However, on the day I stayed, the room was really dusty. And in the morning, I had breakfast. The waiter was unkind to us, scolded us, and it was clear from his facial expressions that he still needed more training. I did not pay for this.Rooms: 3/5
For the money I was expecting way more. Sugar jar had plastic in it. Curtains had holes and so did the walls. Not to mention green scum on the shower walls. Also the sun belting through a window that if u close the curtain will block the TV from view. Coffee was warm just and not good. Bit of a disappointment really. Noteworthy details: Garden is amazing.
If you want exceptional, this is where you need to stay. Everything from arrival to the room , gardens views of Mt Wellington, and the food is just wonderful . Not just a stay but an experience. I would definitely recommend the Islington as a must do in Hobart.Rooms: 5/5
My partner had arranged a birthday surprise for me with a stay at The Islington, a place I had eagerly anticipated due to its reputation for a relaxing environment and top-tier service. However, our initial encounter left much to be desired. When we buzzed the front gate intercom, we were met with an ungracious "who are you" from the speaker – not the warm welcome we expected. Inside, we were confronted by the same discourteous individual who promptly requested our license and credit card information. For an establishment boasting a 5-star status, this was far from our expectations, making us feel uneasy and questioning our choice. The situation continued to disappoint when the same staff member gave us a brief tour before directing us to our room. Upon entering, we found a cheese platter wrapped in cling wrap and laminated signage marred by unsightly marks. At this point, my partner's frustration had reached its peak. He had paid well over a thousand dollars for our stay, and he believed that any other hotel in Hobart would have provided superior service at a lower cost. In an attempt to address our grievances, my partner sought out the same staff member but found him absent. Resorting to a phone call, he expressed his disappointment, but instead of an apology, he received a response that left much to be desired – an offer to leave, with the stipulation of contacting Luxury Escapes for a potential refund. The entire experience left us disillusioned and questioning the 5-star rating. Three stars at best, especially given the quality of service provided. While the grounds were indeed pleasant, the interior furnishings clashed with the building's heritage, giving the impression of hurried assembly from an IKEA catalog. In summary, I would caution anyone considering a stay here to think twice before investing their money in an experience that falls far short of the advertised luxury and service quality.
The Islington was recommended to us by friends and it certainly lived up to its reputation. A truly wonderful, first class experience, with professional, friendly staff and a spectacular location. Our suite was spacious and luxurious, with every convenience catered for. The little personal touches, like the evening bedtime tea and treats, were very appreciated. We particularly enjoyed the meld of old colonial past with the post modern newer build and decor. The dining too was exceptional, both of us enjoyed a 3 course birthday dinner to celebrate and the breakfast both mornings. All was beautifully presented and equally as delicious, with thoughtful vegan options also available for hubby. Only small issue was no lactose free milk 2 mornings in a row, so no coffee for me - as a dietary requirement for many, this should definitely be a staple on offer. Otherwise absolutely wonderful in every way.
