About

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. Frank Zappa

I do recommend this place, but know what you are getting yourself into. I slept in a 14 person dorm and honestly it wasn't bad. Yes people were moving in and out, and there were no luggage locks. However, for the price and charm of the place you can't beat it. The common areas are great and do promote and good sense of a hostel culture. It was probably an old bar because there are booths and a weird layout that works The paintings and decor in the place is that of a weird acid trip at times in the upstairs area. Lastly, the travelers were friendly. Aussie has a lot of working holiday travelers so compared to places like Portugal, Spain, SEA, and such, the culture can be a bit less. Totally understandable as many Backpackers are working. Still there was a good culture here and people did want to talk and do things together
We stayed here at the end of February and our room was brilliant you have the choice between the shared rooms or a private room, car parking for a few extra $ there games plenty of thing to do around the venue. Washing Machines, a Kitchen for guest overall a brilliant place to stay. We stayed for 5 days and I was confused when we didn’t have any room service, just to check in replace any Toiletries or Towels, but that was no big issue at all this was also my first time at a backpacker so if this is all backpackers my bad But overall I’d stay here again. THANKS PICKLED FROG STAFF P.S: Shout out to Jamie for being brilliant over the phone and helping us out before we came down. Incredibly helpful guy.
I am so impressed with the staff and the other respectful people who stay here. People/ staff/ guests, go out of there way to help you. The staff are amazing. I locked myself out of my room and the staff left a spare key in the lock box for me. Bathrooms/ showers were always clean and tidy. Kitchen is well appointed > microwave/ air fryer. Fridges, stoves. Salt/pepper/oil supplied. I left wine and ciders in the fridges and days later they were still there. The position is less than 150 steps from the intercity bus stop and close to salamanca markets, constitution dock. You are close/ walking distance to everything. I highly recommend this hostel.
Myself and my sister stayed in one of the private rooms for a few days while exploring Hobart. Firstly the building is genuinely older which means it’s never going to look completely clean, I saw multiple members of staff cleaning, hoover and mopping common spaces : My suitcase also got completely jammed and the staff went above and beyond to help me out. The beds were squeaky and the floorboards are quite noisy so with people walking around at night I would recommend ear plugs. It is excellent value for money and in a central location to Hobart : lots of info in reception also to find things to do!!
Quiet and clean communal areas, well away from main roads and close to city outskirts, easy to head out of town on the rivulets walk or into town for wide variety of food. Not too far from the supermarket so chill as. Kitchen well stocked and easy to navigate, storage etc. The room had 4 stars because of the exit lighting being far too bright.
Do not stay here! The positive reviews are lies for free drinks. The place is disgustingly bad. Initially booked for one night, arrived to a friendly welcome from the staff member on the desk. First issue was they didn’t read any of the booking notes so me and my friend weren’t together. “Ok we can deal with that” we thought. When we arrived at my room it was clear what a mistake it was booking the hostel. It was clear the hostel was letting people stay in it long term as the room I was assigned had been mostly taken over by what seemed to be one or two other people. The staff member who checked us in had even shown us directly to the room and let me in, so it was clear they don’t care about it. The mattress was filthy and stained. Covered in hairs. Not something I would want to sleep on even with a sheet over it. The duvet was also in a similar condition. They also only had one small locker for valuables available for us. According to my friend the bathrooms weren’t in a good state either. I didn’t stay long enough to check them out myself. I cannot stress enough, to not make the same mistake booking it thinking it is a quirky hostel due to its theme and supposedly “good” reviews which are in reality fake for free drinks. We ended up cutting our losses and leaving for the Ibis Styles. The Pickled Frog is by far the worst hostel I have ever booked. Rooms: Dirty, smelly, cluttered, no storage. Overall terrible. Noteworthy details: Disgusting, dirty hostel.
The place is near to the cbd so is really easy to get there but the rooms are really small for the amount of people that they put in. The toilets are all writing like we were in some kind of high school and you don't actually have hot water in the showers if you have to ask to the staff to reset the system everytime. The staff is friendly. Rooms: Really small rooms
Great vibe. Been living here for 1 month now. Always friendly people around, lots of games to play with new faces, free food section, good selection of pots and pans, free tv/ Netflix if it works. 5 minute walk from Woolworths, definitely a good location in the city. Would highly recommend if you don’t mind sharing your room!
The staff were very welcoming and nice but the room with bunk beds was too small and seemed airless and hot. More bathroom facilities are needed. My mattress was uncomfortable and I was woken from what little sleep I managed to get by the bunk bed shaking and squeaking from every movement from me or the woman below. I think if the room had been cooler and the bunk beds and mattresses better quality I would have been satisfied but I hate not being able to sleep! I did take ear plugs. I suggest taking an eye mask also.
Beware ; NO HOT SHOWERS !! There is a sign in the bathroom saying if you have no hot water please see reception. Which is real handy after you’re already in the shower. I stayed 3 nights and showered morning and afternoon and got 2 hot showers all up. Even if it feels warm to touch you’re getting a cold shower! Go to the shower , check the water is hot, if not go to reception and they will “switch it” or something and then you have to wait and then go back in and there will be hot water. What is this ?????? You’re constantly hearing guests asking if there’s any hot water so they can try and organise a hot shower. The same hair ball was in the shower drain for my 3 night stay. It was quite noisy but this is not always the venues fault. I paid for 3 nights of secured parking to find that there was demountable style accomodation in the car park that had ferals drinking, swearing and carrying on right where I was leaving my vehicle. Not recommended !!
