About

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. Frank Zappa

I’ve stayed in dozens of hostels, but very few left a mark on me like this one. Maybe it was the warmth of the old building. Maybe it was the way the staff remembered my name every morning. Maybe it was the feeling of safety when you sink into a couch surrounded by travellers who all carry their own stories and scars.nOne night, we all sat in the common room sharing travel tales, and someone said, “You know, this place feels like the pause button in life, the safe spot before the next chapter.”nI felt that deeply.nIf you’re looking for more than a bed, if you’re looking for connection, comfort, and the kind of atmosphere that wraps around you like a cozy blanket, this is the place.
Overall, the Hostel has a very specific vibe I would say : I can see how people either love or hate this place. If you're a young, open solo traveller looking for new connections, I can imagine that you'll find some friends here and have a good time. It is an old building with some charme to it. Also, they organize cheap tours around the city and recommend free activities which is amazing. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating.nnFor me, it was just too busy - too many people on limited space, and not one single space where you could find some peace and quiet. I just felt stressed all the time.nnHowever, there are some points to criticize in general:nn- The female bathrooms are wayyy to small for the amount of people. I had to wait in line every morning. Also the sinks are so small that I can barely wash my face properly. The hand papers are nearly always empty. In general they are very old and somewhat dirty and would need to be renovated.n- The kitchen is way too small for the amount of people staying in the Hostel, also it gets really humid and stinky in there as there is no AC. The places to sit are a bit rund down.n- The rooms are fine, but again get stinky and humid as there is no AC. There is also no way to quietly close the doors, it always makes a loud sound. Due to that I didn't have one night of good sleep :/ Also, there is no lockers in the room and something got stolen from me.n- Wifi is super bad.
Thank you pickled frog, you did not dissapoint! Everyone here is lovely, you will make great connections and feel at home. Everynight people are spending time together, from watching movies/tv in the cozy living room to playing board games and pool. Very lively and social, but not loud and abnoxious in any way. The Hostel is also only minutes walk from the CBD and a fantastic rivulet walk filled with platypus. Thank you to the amazing staff. If I’m ever in Hobart again I know where I will stay.
Definitely one of the best hostels for backpackers who want to socialize and meet other travelers in Hobart. The vibe and atmosphere are great.nnSpecial mention to Spike and Kale and Kale’s football team — they are both very friendly and really help keep the essence of The Pickled FrognnOn the downside, the facilities are not the best, but they are still okay for a backpacker hostel. The location is also very convenient.
My 3 day stay turned into 3 weeks when my adventure plans changed mid trip. I love having a private room but having the hostel vibe to meet people and have activities. Kel was great at lining up soccer games bi-weekly and creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Spikes trivia was top notch. And karaoke lined up with my last night there which was a fitting end to the trip. The activities were fun and got people involved. It felt like being back in a college dorm but with the maturity of well traveled neighbors. The kitchen was small and storage was tight when it was full, but the atmosphere was top notch. Would absolutely go back any time I’m in Tasmania.
