Formerly a prestigious Wanganui home Hikurangi was left by the family to the Anglican church in Whanganui. It was subsequently sold and today it is a 'Stay Place' for long term short term motel and back packer accommodation. We took a Deluxe Queen room with Ensuite and breakfast. Obviously still getting on it's feet it still has all the fittings from a private rest home at some stage. The room was nicely presented however the surprise came when the towels were opened to find holes and black grease marks! Mattress really needs replacement too. Breakfast was good well laid out with coffee juice cereal and hot toast. I was disappointed and would have chosen something nicer for my wife.

Cheap accommodation in a fantastic setting. As others have said breakfast is included and there is a kitchen, utensils and food storage available. If I'm visiting the area again Hikurangi will definitely be top.of the list for accommodation!

Very interesting place to stay, it's an old retirement home that's been turned into a hotel/motel. Always very cheap to stay, nice and close to the city, a free continental breakfast, and very nice staff. Rooms are always clean, and very warm. Have stayed twice and have been satisfied with my stay both times.

Best place ever!!! Huge gaming room with pooltable, table tennis, bowling area and much more. Unbeatable price and breakfast was included. The owner is a lovely person who was very helpful. There was no water for half of the building apparently, we immediately were offered a different room for a shower. Just lovely we will definitely come back!!!
