We didn’t stay here, but had a nice meal. It was recommended by the host at our accommodation. The staff were friendly and the food was nice. Good pub meal
Today we popped into the Rutland for brunch. We have been coming to the Rutland for 30 years as Whanganui residents and currently out of towers for brunch, lunch, drinks, dinners and accommodation. Today's experience was different the friendly hospitality wasn't as good and the lady behind the bar counter was actually quite disquieting. She didn't ask basic questions about our order, didn't give us a table number, was confused when I asked for a half pint oncider and was generally unwelcoming and inhospitable in her manner. I was wearing jeans but was otherwise tidy in appearance. We will give the Rutland another go at a later date and if our customer experience has not improved we will take all our business elsewhere.
This place has a great selection of beers on tap. I arrived at 9.30 p.m. on a Thursday and they were reluctant to serve me as it was quiet and the staff wanted to go home. I ordered one beer that just tasted bad - like musty stale socks and dirty water. I immediately told them, and to their credit they replaced it. But the replacement beer also tasted off and tainted! It's a mouldy, musty, plasticky flavour. I can only think that maybe they aren't cleaning their lines properly. It's quite a travesty to be serving what should be good quality beer through dirty lines. I'm not a snob but I do have functional taste-buds and a tongue. Come on guys, don't spoil good beer and your reputation through bad hygiene.
Great stay in this charming period inn. Spacious room, modern shower room, very comfortable bed. Lovely friendly staff. We didn't have the continental breakfast that was included in our rate, as we preferred to pay for hot cooked breakfast instead - which was very tasty. Would definitely stay again.
Characterful, old fashioned hotel in the best way, for this expatriate Englishman, a home from home. Ideally situated in town a short walk to the river, shopping, and visitor attractions. Unfortunately I have marked down to four stars because the bed was unduly firm, almost hard, and uncomfortable to sleep on. Not quite bad enough to complain at the time, though I did think to, but we strongly suggest a better replacement mattress or the use of a quality foam over-mattress cover. No dishcloth by the kettle to wipe up any spills, and whilst the rooms and the hotel were pretty nearly spotless, the mirror on the wall in the bedroom had a thick layer of accumulated dust which should be cleaned off - the cleaners had just forgotten it was there, I imagine. Good selection of craft beers, and the dinner we had was good, I had the warm chicken salad, very tasty The staff were friendly and efficient, no complaints there. Finally we drive a Leaf electric car. There are no recharging facilities at the hotel car park, and there is only one fast charger in the entire town, which is frankly ridiculous. I would strongly suggest the Rutland Arms install two a/c outlets on the wall by the visitors parking area. Type 2 chargers 7kW would definitely be best, and a bit more expensive, but caravan sockets 3.2 kW would work ok for most drivers overnight, with a portable charging cable I keep one in my vehicle but the hotel might need to hire one out A standard plug 1.8 kW nowadays would be considered very inadequate. BEV owners will expect to be charged for the electricity they use with just a modest mark up. The hotel might like to chivvy the council to get type 2 AC chargers installed around the town, and at least one further fast charger in the town centre, and not 1.5 kms away in the New World supermarket car park. The future is here now, and needs accommodating. .
