Story

Welcome to Bistro Gitan.

Named after the gypsy travellers of Europe, Gitan is the cuisine of a contemporary French bistro that takes influence from the surrounding European countries. Set in an old Victorian building & located in Melbourne’s South Yarra right opposite Fawkner park, with close proximity to the city and public transport.

Bistro Gitan offers customers a warm & charming space, mirroring the French & Spanish influences found in the menu. Bistro Gitan is a restaurant that provides excellent food, a constantly changing & creative wine list, and a relaxed atmosphere for those both dining, or just visiting for a drink.

At Bistro Gitan we’re celebrating a French, family style format of eating which is very flexible. The idea behind it is to create a dinner table just as it would be for a family in France.

A famous French restaurant in Toorak, Melbourne, unfortunately the architecture sets the mood for the meal. The service was attentive, but could improve and the menu reasonably varied, although the drinks list is limited and quite expensive. We enjoyed our meal, but loved the deserts, so enjoy. ☺

Been here twice, perfect for a special occasion. First time was for a 20th birthday, second time round was for a date. Both times the food and service were definitely 5 star!

Went for wedding anniversary dinner. Ordered grilled octopus for entree and steak for main and rhubarb and ice cream for dessert. The octopus was burn and bitter. The steak was over cooked, the rhubarb dessert was fresh stick of rhubarb (could be run out of cooked one.)Was not eassy to cut it with the spoon. When the waiter came and ask how everything was. When tried to tell him about the entree to begin with, his replied was “not easy to cook octopus ‘ . No point to continue with the rest.

Beautiful modern French fare. Ambience aplenty. Good wine list. Menu changes regularly.

It's a Fench restaurant and I usually don't like French food, but, I had the best chicken ever, absolutely delicious and amazingly tender.
