A French bistro of 30 years plus, this is a Melbourne institution

Story

Full most nights, busy over lunch and a de rigeur dinner spot in certain local circles; bustling, noisy France-Soir has the panache of a Parisian bistro. Wins are celebrated, deals done and rock stars come and go. In this tiny Melbourne restaurant, it's as much about expert service and casual bonhomie from theatrical, French speaking waiters who deftly weave around close-set tables, as it is about the carte that's changed little over 25 years.

The true definition of a Melbourne institution. I’ve only ever heard people rave about this place — and after dining here, I completely understand why it’s been thriving for over 40 years.nnWhat’s already charming is that bookings are only taken over the phone — no online reservations — which adds to its old-school appeal.nnThe moment you walk in, you can feel the buzz. The atmosphere is electric yet classic — white tablecloths, mirrored walls with menus and specials written across them, and a retro bar greeting you at the entrance. The waiters, dressed in crisp black and white, move gracefully through the space, creating a seamless dining experience. Service was exceptional — attentive, fast, and friendly throughout the night.nnThe food was absolutely exquisite. We started with a dozen oysters, mussels in white wine and cream, and the house-made pork sausage with mustard sauce — all perfection. For mains, we had the Entrecôte, cooked to perfection and served with fries, salad, and our choice of sauce. The portion size was generous, the quality outstanding, and at $53, incredible value. We paired our meal with cocktails followed by a bottle of rosé — the perfect match.nnFrance-Soir is one of those restaurants that stays with you long after you’ve left. A place I’ll always come back to and dream about returning to. It’s fun, timeless, and everything you want from a classic French dining experience. I hope it continues to shine in Melbourne for decades to come.
Our waiter didn’t take our order correctly, so we missed out on one of the dishes we really wanted to try. We also felt the service was quite rude at times.nnThat said, the steak with mushroom sauce was delicious! The white wine mussels and shredded duck were also really good, but very salty which, judging by other reviews, might be a recurring issue. The Crème Caramel was a bit average and underwhelming.nThe atmosphere is lively and the menu is huge — lots of interesting dishes to explore. I’m open to coming back to try more — hopefully with friendlier service and a bit more balanced seasoning.
We visited France-Soir in Melbourne on 02/08/25 after hearing many positive reviews. This place is the perfect restaurant for a “hustle-bustle” atmosphere - but keep in mind it is quite small.nnRegarding the food, we had already eaten quite a large breakfast so we only ordered a few popular entrees. This is what we ordered:nn- Steak tartare 100g $30 n- Burgundy snails with garlic $28n- Scallops with saffron sauce $36 nn = Must-havennOut of these menu items, we felt the tartare and scallops were the star of the show. France-Soir nails using fresh ingredients and perfecting the texture of our foods. The tartare and scallops were both smooth and soft. The snails were very heavy with the garlic flavour, which we did not enjoy.nnOverall we would love to visit again to try some of the mains. A great, high energy atmosphere!
A hidden gem serving French cuisine. Its quite packed and always crowded, best to make a booking. Friendly staff. Food was served quick. The escargot was delicious. They serve excellent bread as well. Duck was cooked nicely. Chips were crispy. Steak was good, wished it was a bigger portion. The dessert was exceptional. Pear tart was amazing, chocolate mousse was rich.
There is a reason that this is a beloved Melbourne institution, the food is delicious.nThe service is quick, attentive and friendly, the wine list is extensive.nI love the steak tartare its perfect, the escargot is tender and packed with garlic, sopping up that butter with the fresh warm bread a delight. I had the rabbit special which was rich and moreish and the profiteroles were an obscenely generous serving.
