Full most nights, busy over lunch and a de rigeur dinner spot in certain local circles; bustling, noisy France-Soir has the panache of a Parisian bistro. Wins are celebrated, deals done and rock stars come and go. In this tiny Melbourne restaurant, it's as much about expert service and casual bonhomie from theatrical, French speaking waiters who deftly weave around close-set tables, as it is about the carte that's changed little over 25 years.

Lovely atmosphere. No shortage of experienced sfaff, good service when seated. Then the steak came out and the disappointment started, poor cut and overcooked. I've had better at my local pub for half the listed price. The final point of disrespect was the assumption of a significantly sized tip already added to the bill as presented. All-in-all not what I had hoped for. Shame.

This restaurant was a disappointment, the place is too cramped, even only the bathroom was small and our table was often jostled when customers and waiters kept going past us. The food was good but the service not so good. When we go to such restaurants that have good reviews and reputation, we expect good service and the total package. I would not recommend this place nor will I go there again. We cut short our meal and went else where to finish our celebration. This place just seems pretentious

Extremely rude staff. Had a reservation booked. Was told to leave by 8:30. I was there at 6:30. Felt cramped. The food was ok. definitely not worth the price though. At the end the bill was thrown on the table. Not recommended.

I've never worked in a restaurant so I can only guess at how hard it must be, but I go to lots of them and the better ones don't seem to have the difficulties that this one regularly experiences. We have celebrated every important and not so important occasion at this restaurant until recently. The service has always been good, even when a little 'French' (and we don't mind, we visit France most years). Recently we were seated at the very back next to a table of very loud women celebrating a recent divorce, despite requesting a window seat for two upon booking a month earlier. We, and several others, had to be moved away from the cacophony in order to be heard. Our waitstaff were apologetic but it was not their fault. Our real gripe was with a booking for a month later, again, a request for the window seat. We walked in immediately after two others who didn't have a table, and they said they didn't have a booking. We were standing behind them and were disappointed to see them offered a place at the window - when the waiter asked us if we had a reservation and we replied in French that we did, it was for a table up the front, he seated us at the bar and offered us a drink while conferring with a colleague. It was clearly an oversight, but again, we found ourselves next to the kitchen door. Get this part of the process right and you'll have loyal patrons for life. The food isn't outstanding, but authentic enough to sustain you between holidays.
