This is a one stop shop for your bird's needs - cages, quality feed, quality toys, medications, magazines, books and sound avian advice.
BIRDCITY is the complete avian centre.
It is the place to go if you are looking for a wide selection of healthy aviary and pet birds as well as all things possible for your bird’s needs.
So what sets BIRDCITY apart from other pet stores?
SPECIALISATION. I specialize in birds and have not diversified into other animal lines for a very good reason. BIRDCITY is the only remaining specialized bird store in metropolitan Melbourne.
SOUND BIRD HUSBANDRY ADVICE. I am a strong advocate of proper bird husbandry. With every bird, toy, cage or food purchase, customers are given all the advice they need to ensure they meet all the bird’s requirements for continued good health and well-being. Birds have been my passion for 40 years so the advice I provide is absolute gold!
BIRD BEHAVIOURALIST. I know how their brains work. This I have come to know from direct personal experience, a wealth of reading material and from just observing them. They tell you all that you need to know – you just have to be able to read the signs. They cannot speak words but their actions speak volumes. I also provide one on one consultations (by appointment only) with you and your pet bird to create understanding and awareness of the quirks of a pet parrot.
OUR SELECTION CATERS FOR THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM. Cages catering for a single budge or a macaw – and our selection of toys are unbeatable and of the highest quality for the safety of your bird. You will not find any cheap $2 toys here for a very good reason.
SPECIALISED SEED MIXES AND TREATS. After years of trialing on my own parrots, I have developed a specialized blend of seed mixes for finches, canaries and parrots of every size. I make a point of sourcing only Australian grown seed for these blends. It must taste pretty good as I have some customers that have birds which will only eat my mixes and would rather starve than eat supermarket seed! We also carry a new line of organic treat foods (BIRDZONE). One of our most popular line are muffins you can bake and share with your pet parrot (these are both human and bird safe).
PROMOTING BIRD-KEEPING FOR CONSERVATION. I am particularly interested in encouraging children to continue the interest in bird keeping. By keeping birds, children come to create an awareness for themselves of the greater world around them and the role that birds play in keeping our environment healthy and balanced. Sadly, there are too many Australian parrots that will cease to exist in the wild within this decade. If we could continue to breed these species in captivity, at least there is a possibility of their continued survival.
SO HOW DO YOU FIND US?
However, after 30 years on the same site (99 Bakers Road, Coburg North) BIRDCITY will be moving to new premises at 651 HIGH STREET, PRESTON and re-opening on 15 January 2015.
For those of you that know Cocky, I am certain he has understood that there are big changes afoot. He has never asked me this question before, but one morning not long after I received the news of the move he asked ‘Are you alright love?’ It brought tears to my eyes as I wondered how this move was going to unfold. He must clearly have sensed my anxiety.
Since then, he has been particularly noisy - morning, noon and night. I just wonder what his brain is making of all this. I sense that these major changes that he is seeing is making him feel insecure. I am doing all in my power to make him happy as we go through this transition.
Stay tuned for further news on the BIRDCITY re-location.
Promoting excellence in bird husbandry and bird conservation
Hello. My name is Monika. I am an avid and passionate bird lover and have been the proprietor of BIRDCITY for 17 years.
My interest in keeping and breeding birds started when I was 8 years old, when an uncle gifted me a pair of canaries in the 1970’s. I was hooked - spending most of my childhood keeping and breeding lovebirds, budgies and quail (the backyard was already bursting at the seams with turtles and chickens!).
My interest grew stronger when as a teenager I raised a young ring-necked parrot named Sasha. Keeping parrots as pets was not a common hobby, and I certainly stood out in the local shopping strip when I would take my parrot for a walk!
It was through Sasha and my many pet parrots over the years that I have come to understand the bond that can develop between a human and a bird, as well as understand the true intelligence of birds, particularly parrots. The term ‘bird brain’ is such an untruth!
I had always dreamed of the opportunity to work with birds all day long. But such dreams don’t come true, do they?
So imagine my surprise when that opportunity came my way in 1995 – the chance to work as a volunteer at BIRDCITY. Two years later in 1997, I purchased the business and have played with my birds ever since!
I am grateful to all my pet birds, many of which have long gone now but I carry them in my heart always Thank you Sasha, Oscar, Ivan, Mr. Jolly, Bandit, Icus and Heckle for all your love.
