More of an open farmland than a park, but it is nice and secluded from the city up above and makes you feel like your out in the country some where. Worth a look, and if it's been raining a waterfall drops off a cliff into the river below.

This is a wild bush place. Not exactly a park as such. It's accessible for young, fit people because it's a distance from the gate where cars are left. It leads to a river which is safe for swimming. We picknicked in the long grass sitting on the bank of the river. Not great for oldies or very young children.

Balsom Park is not well known. It's the former site of a quarry, and is now used as grazing land. Sheep are the usual inhabitants, so if you intend on walking your dog it must be on a leash, and you must pick up after it. As it is grazing land you do need to watch where you step. After crossing the style at the end of William Street you follow the path down a gentle curving slope for several hundred metres. At the bottom a large grassed area is planted with rows of trees, and it is all ringed by the Waiwhakaiho River. Large pieces of concrete from former quarry structures can be seen poking up through the grass. It's a nice quiet spot for a picnic, or to read a book. There is a hidden picnic table.

I was curious to view this place as me and my family had recently settled in nearby. I took my dog for a walk to Balsom Park. I must say it was sure hard to get me and my dog over the gate concealing the entrance. I thought for a few minutes that I had gone the wrong way for I noticed many groups of sheep and their off spring huddling down the path. At the bottom of the path I had reached a flat and stable field with minimum gorse and weeds. The sheep were down there too which heavily excited my dog due to his animal instincts. There were sheep droppings on the pathway which motivated me to watch my step. I realised this place couldn't be that popular due to the absence of litter or graffiti. I took a look around this marvellous place and that is when I came to the riverside. The riverside looked like an ideal and impressible location for swimming and/or family picnics. I was about to venture further down this amazing piece of scenery when I saw a few sights that greatly horrified me!!! There upon the very edge of the river was a rotting corpse of a sheep. What was even worse were the maggots that inhabited it. I turned away from this sight in absolute outrage and disgust, only to step upon a hard object half buried in the sand. It was a skull of a deceased sheep. I examined it and discovered that the skull may have been there for quite some time. The council really need to pay more attention to this place as people should not have to trod upon piles upon piles of sheep leavings, nether less see disgusting corpses infested with parasites or skulls by the edge of the water. I did not discover why the sheep were down here or who they belong to but I can tell you I wasn't very impressed. But don't let that fool you. This is a great place to come with your family, dog or even general exercise. It really isn't all that bad.
