Awesome park.nSo much to see.nFantastic ice creams.nThe fern room is so well kept with plants and ferns. I actually enjoyed it more than the Hamilton gardens.nAnd it's free to enter.
Wow and wownBeautiful park in every way.nOutstanding natural beauty.nGreat walks and even a cafe and toilets.nHighly recommend.nA must see as it’s the jewel of New Plymouth.
The TSB Festival of Lights is such a highly anticiapted event and a great reason to visit New Plymouth durinf the summer holidays. I've been to this event twice so far and each time there are new and different instalments for locals and visitors to enjoy. The city is so generous to offer this event as a free event.nnPukekura Park is huge and I can imagine the park is beautiful in the day time for a walk.nnAs this event is more advertised now, I would think more people outside of New Plymouth would come thus finding parking was much for difficult. Options are to get there a bit earlier or park further but most street parking will fill up very fast. The best time to go is after 8.30pm to enjoy the full effects of the lights.
Stepping into Pukekura Park for the TSB Festival of Lights isn’t just attending an event; it feels like walking into a waking dream. The magic hits you first not through the visuals, but the vibe—a collective, hushed awe shared by thousands of strangers.nCrossing the Poet’s Bridge, I found myself pausing just to watch the reflection shimmer in the main lake, a mirror world of neon purples and electric greens. It’s mesmerizing. But the real heartbeat of the festival is the people. I watched a grandfather lift a little girl onto his shoulders so she could reach out toward a hanging lantern, her face illuminated with pure, unfiltered wonder. That quiet moment of connection stuck with me more than the technology.nNavigating the fernery feels like exploring an alien planet, the familiar native bush painted in light. Later, sprawled on the grass by the Hatchery Lawn, listening to live music with the smell of food truck spices drifting in the cool night air, you feel a deep sense of belonging. It’s a summer ritual that reminds you how beautiful simple, shared joy can be.
It's long been on my NZ bucket list to see the Festival of Lights and I wasn't disappointed. The park is a fabulous place to visit in the daytime but, during the summer, it really does hum with creativity and clever innovation in the evening. If you can make it to the festival, it really is worth it!
