We came here for the Twilight session of High Tea to celebrate a birthday. We liked the lounge room setting for our group and settled in for the early evening. They brought out the four-tier towers to our table, each tier laden with beautifully arranged morsels served on pretty Wedgewood china. One of the towers was missing a plate but the server clearly didn't notice. When we informed them, they removed the place setting for one of the group (?!) who had to ask for a replacement set. One of the teas and strainer took an extraordinary time to arrive. As one friend put it, "they were too busy to be attentive." The gorgeous presentation deserves a lot photos and appreciation from everyone. The taste buds in our group varied much so there was something here for everyone. My favourite was the blue swimmer crab remoulade with fennel slaw, yuzu, avocado cream and salmon roe. The pink champagne macaron with an intriguing pink champagne and Madagascar vanilla syrup pipette was light and delicate; the pipette being a talking point. We enjoyed the indulgent treats and pairing with their chosen blend of teas. Generous serves meant nobody finished their share before we declared ourselves too full to eat more. Despite written literature saying they will stop serving after 8 p.m., they continue to serve more drinks and refilled our teapots. All in all, a pleasant experience once the initial inattentiveness was dealt with.

My birthday high tea was a very disappointing experience and as a result, I will not be returning to The Langham for any future event. Their service, or lack thereof, was the most disappointing aspect of the afternoon. Our high tea started at 3:15pm and it wasn’t until 4:09pm that we received our tea. The most irritating part was that my friend had to go to the bar to ask a different staff member to that who was serving us, if we could order our teas at 4pm. This meant that by the time the tea was served, our scones (which were served at 3:30pm) were cold and harder than preferred. Furthermore, our waiting staff did not clear our table of the empty plates that covered it - which made taking photos to mark the occasion unsightly. So, we decided to place all unwanted dinnerware into a tall pile and give them to a random passing waiter. This is simply not good enough. If you see an empty high tea stand, with a pile of plates stacked next to it, it would be reasonable to assume one of two things: a) the party was satisfied with the small number of sandwiches and therefore offer more, as not everyone is full after 4 finger sandwiches. b) confirm that the party is finished and clear some of the table contents. I hope The Langham read this review and learn from their shortfalls, as there is plenty of room for improvement if they wish to rival other afternoon teas venues around Melbourne. With regard to my choice of venue to host my birthday afternoon tea - I have regretted it since Sunday. Instead of feeling elated by the service and my friends’ experience, I felt embarrassed that my friends were the ones cleaning the table and chasing the waiters for tea orders - this is simply unacceptable when you’re paying for an elegant afternoon out. Never again.

Lovely high tea experience. Went on a weekday, food was lovely, tea was great, nice decor and service was wonderful. Overall perfect high tea.
