My recent campervan hire in New Zealand with Spaceships Rentals was largely a positive experience, offering great value for money. One of the standout features was the ample storage space. Echoing previous advice, I strongly recommend bringing soft bags, and packing pods truly elevate organization within the compact living area. The secondary storage compartment primarily housed the cooking equipment and the fridge. For efficient food management, I suggest acquiring a few reusable shopping bags from a local supermarket to categorize your groceries. This made accessing items in the rear compartment and throughout the van much simpler. Additionally, I discovered useful spaces along the sides of the main storage units, perfect for stowing smaller, loose items. With a bit of creativity, you can really maximize the vehicle's storage potential for both general items and food.nAs a solo traveler, the bed length was perfectly adequate. However, two adults would likely find the small double bed cramped. It's important to note that this campervan seems best suited for summertime adventures. Unfortunately, I experienced almost constant rain during my three-week rental, significantly limiting outdoor living. The interior space is really only designed for sleeping. Consequently, there's absolutely no dedicated area for cooking or eating inside. While I did opt for an additional package that included camping chairs and a table, these were unusable in wet weather. Therefore, if you plan on staying at campsites, I highly recommend seeking out those with undercover shared cooking facilities, as these invariably also include a small seating area. This provides a crucial alternative when the weather is poor and also offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow travelers.nThe customer service was excellent. Their WhatsApp communication was particularly impressive; any queries I sent through were invariably answered within approximately 24 hours – I couldn't fault that at all. Despite having over 300,000 kilometers on the odometer, the vehicle felt remarkably solid and safe throughout my trip, which was reassuring.nI would also echo comments from other reviewers that the front doors had a tendency not to stay open on their own. While this was occasionally annoying, it really wasn't a major issue overall.nOverall, I found the hire to be great value for money. While Spaceships Rentals obviously couldn't control the weather, if I were to travel at the same time of year again, I would likely opt for a slightly larger van with the capacity for indoor cooking and dining in case of rain – a lesson learned!nFinally, a little tip: I utilized ChatGPT to help plan my routes. By specifying my interests – including outdoor activities like hiking and watersports, as well as cultural experiences and, specifically for this trip, a search for local Kiwi jewellers – it provided some fantastic recommendations. My last comment is that I done quite a lot of research before I booked a campervan and I have to say that out of all of the companies I’ve researched in New Zealand spaceship rentals came out with by far the best reviews and I cannot fault to the customer service I received. Highly recommended and I would use them again.
Could not have had a worse experience. My partner and I decided to rent a campervan with this company, booked through an external company who organised everything for us they were fab however the disappointment this company caused would’ve ruined our trip if we let it.nTo start things off we picked it up within the first day we noticed the door wouldn’t open, NONE of the USB were working and the fridge also kept dying. We went back the next day drove out of our way to get this fixed, they were able to fix the door and told us WE WOULD HAVE TO BUY a USB adapter ourselves to make this work. Outrageous. I spoke to the manager who said she would refund us the adapter and refund the day fee for the van. The experience just kept getting worse. We couldn’t fix the fridge we were nowhere near the stations and also they told us in the garage that they couldn’t fix it and it was just going to have to do. Me and my partner spent a fortune on food as it was either going off in the fridge or we would have to eat out because the fridge kept cutting out despite always keeping it on 1 as instructed. I raised a complaint with customer services but they did nothing except a sorry as the guy said when we dropped it back to Auckland he felt so sorry for us and the amount of money we paid is awful for the way we were treated that was coming from a staff member. ANYWAY to sum up PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH we could have got a lot better for our money had we shopped somewhere else. We have not recommended this to any of our friends who have been travelling New Zealand and wouldn’t wish an experience like we had on anyone.
Rented a minivan for 8 days. The van was ok but it was an old one. Pick up was ok. The van had a couple of issues that should be addressed. The front could not stay open. It’s annoying especially when you are in a camping and you need to take stuff in and out. It tells me than the maintenance should be better on those rentals. The staff was great on both pick up and return but I feel for the price i should have a more recent version. Next time I will shop more as they are several companies that offer this service.
We chose to rent a Spaceship for our three week stay in NZ based on pricing and size we wanted something small/easy to park in regular parking stalls around town, and it turned out to be a great choice!nnThe double bed inside was comfortable enough if a bit on the tight side! for two, and with the awning setup with the boot open it was nice and breathable and didn't feel claustrophobic. We only got caught out in the rain once, and water did leak inside the seams of the awning — the seams were stretched to be a bit open, I imagine due to age/use. The fridge/freezer is small, but really useful to have as you travel.nnThe side awning which you can place over the open side door of the van was nice to sit under for shade on those hot sunny days. Unfortunately, the awning didn't hold up so well on the windier days we had by the beach as it tended to buckle under the pressure, so we weren't able to use it as much as we would've liked. The design probably needs a bit of a revision to add some structural strength to make it more useful in the wind!nnWhen we picked up the Spaceship there was an issue with the table that held the camp stove it wouldn't lock into place so Spaceships kindly gave us a separate folding table and two camp chairs to make up for it, which we really appreciated!nnAdded bonus: the fuel efficiency of the van was pretty decent, and we didn't have to fill up as much as I expected!nnIf you're the sort of traveller who likes to spread out their clothing/gear and be able to find things easily, you'll probably want a larger vehicle to give you that extra space. But if you're a compact traveller looking for a simple, affordable, and comfortable way to easily travel around NZ, then a Spaceship is for you!
We rented a camper for almost three weeks. Drove all over the North & South Islands. Although the refrigerator started acting up but we thought a good deal. Their staff communicated well and our rental was about half what some of the other companies were charging. Highly recommend them.
