A beautiful quick walk in the bush! There are many steps to climb so not recommended if you're not good with stairs. The terrains vary across the walk - decked paths, stone paving and mud.
Nearly a stones throw from the centre of Orewa Town centre you will find this small historic forest. The only downside side is that there is a massive development of apartments on one side of this picturesque forest.
We enjoyed this reserve immensely last year when we visited in May, but last week, when we revisited, it was a bit neglected and very muddy. Also disappointing to find Walnut Cottage is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Well maintained board walk and more would be built. Beautiful kauri and kauri palm trees everywhere. 3 access to the reserve. The path could lead to longer walk towards the west. Would love to explore more one day.
So beautiful... Due to Kauri Dieback only 2 entrances are open and you have to brush and disinfect your shoes before entering or exiting. Also, the lookout track is closed but the loop track remains open/the path from entrance to other entrance hillcrest rd to old north rd. Stay on the path/boardwalk to save the Kauri.
