This is such a great ole theatre in great condition. Like how your 90 year old grandpa still goes for a morning run type of condition!nWhat amazed me was the preservation of everything. The old 35mm projection system and movie posters reminding everyone of a time before Disney bought Marvel. A better time.
The theatre is beautiful and historic and screens some cool stuff. I just wish the seats were a little more comfy. You can get some two seater lounges on the ground level.
The seats aren't the comfiest, especially if you're there for a long film, and the audio can be hit or miss. Sometimes it doesn't feel as clear as it should be. But overall, it's a fun spot if you're after something different from your usual cinema experience.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and review The Astor Theatre. And I'm all out of bubblegum.nnThis is a great place for movie lovers and easily one of the best things to do in Melbourne.nnYou and your friends will be saying let's all go to the lobby to get ourselves a treat. I personally recommend the choc tops.
The Astor theatre is a fantastic old Art Deco style single screen cinema that shows some new releases but also shows many many old classics and cult films. Thank god there is somewhere like that 15 mins from home! Because I love my old films and I wish I went there more often. Seen The Goonies, Soylent Green and The Omega Man while tonight 17.9.22 saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show accompanied by The Pelvic Thrusts, performance artists who really give it everything! Definitely go and see them you'll never forget it. You can get alcohol here to take in as well as usual snacks and choc tops. However there is nowhere to put your empty glasses except on floor and at end of movie you could hear many a glass being smashed! Parking is street only and we had to park literally 1.5 km away. Worthwhile checking out their program online to see what takes your fancy! 18.9 the Michael Biehn experience and screening of Terminator. Michael Biehn was a high school crush so you bet I paid for photo and autograph experience!! I have never been to one of these fan signings before and was amazed at how many were there, couple of hundred easy. So be prepared to queue but well once in a lifetime. Also note try Astor's own waffle cone choc top, delicious. However 15 min wait for popcorn, no. So 2 days 2 classic films, The Rocky Horror Show and The Terminator. Brilliant! 1.10 Double feature. The Lost Boys newly restored 4k version. What a classic! One I rewatch every couple of years and a movie that really stands the test of time. So funny, scary, suspenseful and cool. But Nightmare on Elm Street oh no does not stand up today and at times difficult to watch. So interesting seeing a baby faced Johnny Depp!
