The place is always packed, so there’s clearly no doubt about the food quality. We came for dinner on a Wednesday night and waited around 10–15 minutes for a table. The space felt a bit cramped though, as the tables are placed quite close together.nnWe ordered:n- Mixed Giro Platter: marinated lamb and chicken. Easily the standout of the night. The meat was full of flavour, nicely seasoned, and grilled just right so it stayed juicy inside.n- Moussaka: I personally enjoyed it because I like slow-cooked dishes, though my friends weren’t impressed. The seasoning felt a bit flat.n- Homemade Tarama: basically a chewy cheese bread that was extremely salty.nnI would definitely come back for the Giro Platter alone. Service was also very good, especially the staff member looking after our table, who was genuinely attentive and friendly.
It was my first visit to Stalactites and I can definitely see why it’s such a Melbourne institution.nnA few things let the experience down. Groups of fewer than six can’t make a booking, so you have to line up. On top of that, if someone in your group is running late, they won’t seat you until everyone has arrived, even if there are tables available, and they’ll let other groups go in ahead of you. I understand the policy, but it made the wait a little frustrating.nnOnce seated, the service unfortunately wasn’t great. The team seemed very short staffed and constantly rushed. It took around 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order, and when we wanted a second round we had to try and get someone’s attention. Our table was also sticky when we sat down and we had to ask for it to be wiped. The staff member who originally seated us later brought out our food, and when we asked if the table could be cleaned he rather abruptly told us to ask our waiter instead.nnThat said, the kitchen absolutely delivered. They were very accommodating with changing items in the mixed dips to cater for an allergy, which we really appreciated. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. The chilli feta dip was fantastic, and surprisingly, as someone who isn’t vegetarian, the vegetable fritters were the standout dish for me. They were absolutely delicious. There are also plenty of smaller meal options, which is great if you’re not a big eater.nnWe sat upstairs and it was warm and comfortable on a cold Melbourne day, with a lovely view overlooking the city streets.nnOverall, the food lived up to the reputation, but the service experience didn’t. I’d happily return for the food, just hoping they have a few more staff on the floor next time.
We had an incredible dining experience at Stalactites Restaurant! They serve absolutely amazing Greek food and delicious desserts. The atmosphere is fantastic with a vibrant energy, as both the ground floor and upper floor were completely packed. We were also nicely served by the friendly waiters and waitresses who made sure we were well taken care of throughout our meal. Just a quick heads up that you should expect to wait for about 15 to 30 minutes for a table, so it is definitely better to arrive early to queue. Highly recommended!
Stalactites is a great spot if you’re looking for hearty Greek food in Melbourne. Even outside the usual lunch rush, the restaurant was still buzzing, which speaks to its popularity and lively atmosphere.nnThe meal was enjoyable overall. The lamb shoulder was tender and full of flavour, the sausages were well seasoned, and the salad was fresh and balanced the meal nicely. The only letdown was the potatoes, which were a little more sour and acidic than expected. Aside from that, the dishes were satisfying and made with quality Australian ingredients.nnOverall, it’s a solid choice for generous, flavourful Greek food, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a Melbourne favourite.
Service is horrible. make me very uncomfortable.nfood is so so 5 out of 10nfritter is bit oilynvine leave is nothing outstandingnmeat platter chicken taste bland i think chef forgot add salt. lamb is ok. also no sauce provided for meat platterntraditional salad is nothing special even i can make itnif its just a random greek restaurant i may give 3 star but this is famous greek restaurant with 9000+ review and long wait timendefinitely not worth it. wont recommend
