I don't go on the train much at all. I decided to use the free train to get to my appointment, for once, which was in Melbourne at St Vincent's hospital in Fitzroy from Gippsland. I used the V-line app to find my way there.nI got to my appointment by going on the V-line and changing to a MET train at Richmond to get to Parliament station and walked from there, as per what the app said to do with the 'journey planner'. I didn't know what time my appointment would finish, so I thought I'd be able to work it out as I went along.nOn my way back home, I took the MET train from Parliament station back to Richmond where I got off the MET train at platform 9, then I was supposed to get on the V-line train to get back to Gippsland. The V-line app told me to go to the 'V-line platform' to board the V-line train to get back to Gippsland. This confused me, as there was no such platform called the 'V-line platform' at the Richmond station!!! So, I had to try and work it out on the Richmond train station screens, what platform it could be! Trying to work it out on the train station screens was confusing, as it seemed completely different to how the V-line app works.. so I saw some Gippsland town names on the screen of the platform 9 screen that I was currently on and thought that I was on the right platform, only to realise there were only 'MET train's' pulling up at the time I was meant to board the V-line train back to Gippsland, as per the time on the V-line app. I then asked a person, waiting at the station, where the 'V-line platform' is or could be and they said it might be platform 6. So I went there, only to realise that I had missed the V-line train and the whole platform was empty, with no-one waiting for trains. I then walked all the way to the other end of the platform, as the other end I was at said no exit. I finally got to the other end of the platform and found a train timetable in paper format on the wall where the exit ramp is and a train station attendant at the end of the ramp of which there weren'tany on the platforms that I could see. I asked them which platform I should be on for the V-line train to Gippsland and she confirmed it was platform 6 and that it leaves in another 3/4 of an hour for the V-line train back to Gippsland. I was so flustered and sweaty from trying to get to the correct platform.
I visit Richmond Station all the time as a Melbourne local from the south east, and it’s honestly one of the more convenient stations to pass through. It’s super close to the heart of Richmond and has multiple train lines running through regularly, so it’s an easy interchange point. It’s the main stop for venues like the MCG, AAMI Park and Rod Laver Arena, which means it becomes the main station during big sporting events and concerts. It’s also only a short walk to Richmond’s nightlife, so you’ll probably see crowds heading out to celebrate after a game or on weekends.nnThere are multiple entrances and exits, though the rear ones are mostly opened during major events. It can get very crowded when something big is on, but overall it’s a large station with plenty of platforms. Inside the main building there’s a police office, a kiosk, a small food stand with hot food, drinks and snacks, and a counter where you can sort out a Myki. There are toilets in the main building too, plus accessible entrances with ramps at both ends. It’s kept pretty clean by staff, though like any inner city station it can feel a little icky at peak times. One thing I really love is the view over the surrounding parkland. It’s also close to Jolimont Station, which makes switching lines easy, and there are nearby trams that can take you straight into the city or elsewhere.
Particular now when faresna free, travelling by train is easy and cheap. RIchmond station is situated close to shops, MCG and some of the best cafè and restaurants, sadly I couldn't stop and enjoy, I was visiting someone in Epworth hodpital, a few minutes bus from Punt Road or 20 minute walk.
The station is quite simple and well aligned which is pleasing to the eye. One underpass is quite dirty but the one people use more is OK
Another day, another complete disaster on Melbourne’s public transport system. After years of supporting Melbourne PT, I have to admit it’s one of the worst for incident management. Today’s experience was the tipping point: top three train lines affected, yet the information on station monitors was completely misleading and irrelevant.nnRichmond Station was absolute chaos, with no clear guidance for commuters. Even the PTV app was no help—it displayed information that was outright wrong. To make matters worse, the replacement buses were poorly managed. Darling Station was the designated bus replacement stop, but only specific trains were stopping there. We had to pass two trains skipping that station—how hard is it to add a stop when there’s a major incident?nnTo my surprise, the bus replacement from Darling only went as far as Caulfield, where I had to switch to the same Frankston trains I was waiting for earlier. What was the point of waiting in that massive line for a bus if I could have just stayed at Richmond? This was a complete waste of time and effort.nnThe replacement buses were painfully slow, with massive queues and just one bus being boarded at a time. This lack of foresight and preparation for predictable issues like bus replacements shows an unacceptable level of incompetence.nnMelbourne PT’s inability to manage incidents effectively is beyond frustrating. These are basic services—clear communication, functional apps, and efficient bus replacements—that any well-run system should provide. It’s high time for serious changes to how incidents are handled.
