Walking up Rangitoto is a lovely experience, for tourists and locals alike. On a sunny day it can get pretty hot as a good portion of the track is very exposed. There is no water available on the island so bring a couple of bottles per person. The view from the top on a clear day really is stunning, so be sure to leave time for a decent break at the top. The ferry ride is usually pleasant but can get rougher in bad weather.

I think the idea of this place is more alluring than the reality- the landscape becomes fairly monotonous after a while. It's refreshing to find an island well preserved and not covered in rubbish and food kiosks. Worth a visit if you're in Auckland and looking for a day trip.

Nice short get away from Auckland city. Easy ferry ride or kayak paddle if you are so inclined! Nice view from summit.

Nice for a half day trip. Check the ferry times before you go, as they do not go there frequently. The view from the summit is amazing and so are the caves. One of which you can walk through with your own flashlight.

Rangitoto is a pretty unique volcanic island, with a number of different walking routes to choose from. We chose to walk directly to the summit, and it took around 1hr to get there. The track starts off fairly well maintained, but be warned: it becomes reasonably steep, and often has roots and steps. It's certainly an effort to get to the top, but the views are worth it :)
