Puffing Billy Railway is Australia’s favourite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. Puffing Billy operates daily except Christmas Day in the Dandenong Ranges.

Story

Puffing Billy runs daily except Christmas Day. Travel on this century-old steam train through the forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges, only one hour east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia!
Dangle your legs over the side of the open-sided carriages of the Excursion Trains, or join us for one of the many Events and Dining options available.
The Steam & Cuisine Luncheon operates daily (except Victorian Public Holidays) at 12.30pm in the First Class dining carriages. A range of Evening Dining experiences are also available.
Thomas the Tank Engine visits every Autumn and Spring, and the children can meet Santa and travel on specially decorated trains in the beginning of December. For more information see http://puffingbilly.com.au/en/events-and-dining/

I’m about to depart from Belgrave and travel through the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, so I’ll keep this short.

I know, I too can get a bit steamed up at times, but I always make sure that my train carriages are happy and healthy – that way we all enjoy the journey! When you’re on this page please play nice and treat all other ‘Puffing Billy’ friends with respect.

If you say anything abusive or obscene I’ll remove your comment. I want this to be a place where everyone can express themselves and feel comfortable - no matter what their opinion is or whether they’re young like one of our diesel locomotives or century-old like me!

Talking about expressing oneself – this Facebook page is here so that I can enjoy the limelight! Our 'Puffing Billy’ page may or may not be interested in your business’ products, but this is a place where I should be allowed to shine so please refrain from promoting your business on my Facebook page. A wonderful scenery through the woods, a trip back in time with this steam train. The experience is quite expensive but worth it. You may not want go to the end of the trip though. We sat first in a cheap car: everyone sat on the edge letting their legs hang outside. On the way back we sat in a comfy car with proper seats and table, and a platform between 2 cars. Kids (4 and 7) loved it!

This was a really really nice afternoon out. Although the weather was not the best because it was raining this place was still amazing. The volunteers and staff were really good. Located right near Belgrave railway station it's very easy to get to of you don't have it don't want to use private vehicles. I hope to come back again here soon for another wonderful train ride.

Definitely worth visiting with kids. A pleasant ride in a warm day. Take bathing suites with you as there is a wading pool in the lakeside for kids I'm not sure if I'd go myself without kids as I'd enjoy more running the course but I guess I am an outlier in that sense. But kids under 10 will surely be happy to get a ride.

A delightful experience! We sat in one of the last cars of the train, of course sitting on the ledge hanging out the window and were rewarded with a great view of the train as it went around bends. The conductors and staff were exceptionally friendly and it was just a really fun time!

It’s quite an experience of a lifetime and you definitely can’t miss this. Sitting on the edge of the train and admire the scenery, kinda amazing. Do bring along a mask or scarf as the steam will release some smoke/substances into the air and will go into your face. Be there earlier than your train departure time to avoid disappointment in seat choices as they are first come first serve basis for the normal tickets.
