Fantastic museum. The free to look around areas are fabulous and took around 1.5 hours for a good look through, but you could easily spend 2-3 hours looking at more detail and interacting with the displays.nWe went to specifically look at the Relics display which is a temporary display that is there until the 27 April 2025. It was stunning, tickets required to this area. Well worth a visit.nThere is also a science and tropical area with 100’s of butterflies . It’s a brilliant experience. Well worth it.nWheelchair friendly for 90% of the areas.nSitting areas around the museum, so if you get tired easily this is great.nClean toilets.nCafe and shop there too. We didn’t use these services this time.
Most of the place is free but some areas are paid. We paid to go see the butterflies AMAZING and the lego relics also amazing.nHighly recommend going even just for the butterflies.nThey also have great areas to entertain the kids like a giant slide and other experiment type things. My 2 year old loved it.
Probably the best attraction or at least museum in Dunedin?nThe science section is one of the best I've seen, actually fun to interact with as adults.nThe butterfly area is incredible.nThe relics exhibit was a fun idea but not my cup of tea.nThe southern Māori section was a bit bare in spots, with no explanation as to bare displays in some areas.nGreat gift shop too!
I had a fantastic visit to the Tuhura Otago Museum! The building itself is stunning, with a perfect blend of modern design and historical charm. There’s so much to see, and the majority of the museum is free to explore you can donate.nnThe highlight of my visit was definitely the impressive collection of animals on display. From fascinating natural history exhibits to rare specimens, it was a real treat for anyone interested in wildlife. Equally captivating were the exhibits on Māori culture, which offered insight into the traditions, art, and history of the indigenous people of New Zealand. Both these sections were not only educational but visually striking as well.nnParking is ok, with street parking available or a nearby parking lot. Best of all, parking is free on Sundays. There is a nice museum restaurant and toilets are clean.nOverall, the Otago Museum is a must-visit for anyone in Dunedin, offering an enriching experience for visitors of all ages!
This museum exceeded expectations. The exhibits are displayed in ways which both draw you in and feel like your part of the exhibit. Said another way I felt like I was learning from wonderful artifacts vs looking a glass display case. I have seen plenty of museums show off an animal skeleton so when this museum displays a stuffed seal beside the skeleton it is so much better. They have a kids section which I didn’t visit but if your a kid I’d suggest it based on how well they did everything else
