Lake St Clair Lodge

About

A world away is closer than you think...

Story

Lake St Clair is the deepest lake in Australia and located inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area within the boundaries of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park.

The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area protects one of the last true wilderness regions on Earth and encompasses a greater range of natural and cultural values than any other region on Earth.

This unique wilderness area is home to many endangered plants and animals, and was also at the heart of the trading routes for the Tasmanian Aboriginal for thousands of years. Its dramatic landscapes and the call to adventure exist in harmony here.

Lake St Clair Lodge is exclusively located inside this fragile and globally significant area and is proud to be at the heart of nature-based and eco-tourism experiences in Tasmania.

The room was beautiful (we had cabin 32 with a lake view) and the spa was such a welcome ending to the Overland Track! The staff were also lovely. However, they were clearly very overworked and dealing with some less-than-efficient systems. A few improvements by management could really lift this place up a notch. I was shunted about from one desk to another just to make a dinner reservation (the reception desk recommended a reservation, but you had to go to the cafe to make that reservation, joining a long and slow-moving queue which was fairly annoying since I'd only just ordered a coffee there). For dinner, the food was pretty overpriced, but I can also understand it would take a lot to get fresh produce into such a remote place. Be warned that the kitchen closes at 8pm, which although early is fine IF you are warned that it is closing! Don't get the roasted cauliflower dish, it was a few veggies with a sriracha sauce for $23, would have been a rip-off at half the price. The staff very kindly still managed to make us some dessert after the kitchen had closed however, which was appreciated. The buffet breakfast was great, just what we needed the next morning. Overall I would recommend Lake St Clair Lodge as a nice and easy option to treat yourself after a week-long hike, but with a few updates it could really be something quite special. The location is gorgeous, the main building is lovely and the cabin that we had was everything we could want.

After completing the Overland Track, our group came here to have a quick bite. The lady working at the till was obviously overworked and not getting the support from her kitchen staff. None of the food was labelled or priced in the cold display. She didn't know what half the food was and the kitchen staff was really rude about helping her. There was also no price so we didn't know what things cost until she rang up the bill - We also didn't bother asking what the price was as the queue was getting long and finding out what was in the pastries took long enough. I ordered the frittata from the cold display and it came with a salad which I thought came on its own. So was charged for a salad whereas my partner ordered the lamb pastry from the cold display and it came on it's own without any sides - no consistency there. Our friend wanted a hedgehog slice but was given a brownie - No labels for the food items added to the confusion. Our other friend waited 15 minutes for a beer and had to follow up on it! Another family finished there meals before their drinks arrived. Terrible service can be blamed on the lack of management and staff support. Over priced food and average tasting.

Generous sized well appointed room with a super comfy bed (we stayed in a cabin). The staff were very friendly and provided great service. It’s a tad expensive, but what you’d expect as it’s remote (for Tasmania). Nice place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle, and a nice place to recoup after the Overland Track.

Staff are poorly trained and the kitchen is quite slow. Food was nice but on the expensive side for what you get. The dining area setup is quite nice.

Great place to stay although sadly we didn't see any platypus.
