This hotel has a rather unusual room layout that may not suit everyone. The bathroom and shower doors have noticeable gaps at the top and bottom, which means there is very little privacy. Sounds and in some cases even smells travel easily into the room. The sink is also located directly in the bedroom area, so it essentially feels like you’re sleeping in your bathroom. It’s an odd design choice, especially at this price point.nnAnother thing that stood out was a conversation my travel companion and I overheard between a staff member and a guest. The staff member casually asked a female solo traveler whether she was traveling alone and what she was doing in the city. While it may have been meant as friendly chit-chat, it felt a bit inappropriate and unnecessary from a privacy and safety perspective.nnThe hotel itself is clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. When the air conditioning in our room started making strange noises and couldn’t be fixed, they quickly moved us to another room, which we appreciated.nnOne other thing to note: there is no real lobby or common area where guests can sit before check-in or after check-out. There’s only a small reception counter, while the other spaces are dedicated to the bar and restaurant.nnOverall, the staff were attentive and the rooms were clean, but the room design and lack of privacy were significant drawbacks for us and didn’t feel justified given the price. Something to keep in mind when booking if privacy and comfort are important to you.
I have had excellent service since I walked through the door!!! Emily at check in was attentive, friendly and helped me with a bit of a situation like it was absolutely nothing! Anna at night service has always been so friendly and helpful. The staff have all been so excellent, the rooms are super clean, modern and homely at the same time. The staff really make you feel part of the family and make you feel so welcome. I had an ongoing issue with my TV, but then Superman Joe swept in and fixed it within 2 minutes. If you like classy modern accomodation with super friendly staff, this is your place. I stayed here with business, so I didn’t get to choose where I stayed, but I will be pressuring my superiors to consistently book this hotel! What a wonderful stay!
The best thing about the hotel is its location. It's close to the CBD, the train and metro stations, etc.nThe reception is small, and I've not seen a lobby, or perhaps there isn't one. The three elevators are accessed by a few steps, and I haven't seen a wheelchair ramp.nThe decor is industrial, and the same is in the the rooms. The lighting in the restroom and shower in the room is poor. A vinyl record player I didn't use it and a basket of paid snacks take up a lot of space in the bedroom, and the mini-fridge is completely occupied by paid drinks. The beds are comfortable, not too soft. The rooms are soundproofed and tidy, but it's not worth paying extra for rooms with a mini-balcony, as opening the window risks letting in huge cockroaches from outside. The friendly reception staff explained that cockroaches are common in Sydney in the summer.nA big minus is the lack of a breakfast buffet; only a la carte breakfast is available. For a good buffet, it's worth going to one of the nearby hotels around 30 AUD per person.nTo sum up, the hotel is nice, but looking at its stars, I expected more.
I have stayed at Ace Sydney many times, but this recent stay was genuinely disappointing.nnAcross a two night stay, I had no working shower. I was repeatedly asked if I had “checked the taps” or “checked the shower,” by multiple staff which was frustrating and dismissive. No guest is going to invent an issue with hot water, and I am familiar with this exact plumbing fault from a previous building I lived in. It was a building-wide problem, not user error.nnI was offered another room to shower in, but the shower in that room did not work properly either. Despite this, I was told the issue had been “resolved,” even though no one actually came to check my shower during my stay. They checked the room next door but after 30 seconds of having the hot water running in there it stopped. My shower didn’t have hot water at all. It left me feeling like I was being made out to be the problem rather than the hotel acknowledging a genuine fault. Like it felt like a job. I just gave up because I knew it was just a waste of time. It was 12:30am at this point.nnMy room was also not serviced at all I left at 8:30am and returned at 3pm and no service occurred despite me putting the sign out The tea cups were dirty on arrival, one of the minibar chips was out of date, and my door key stopped working because the note about my mum checking in at a different time was not actioned, even though I had notified them during booking and again at check in.nnAll of these things added up to a stay that felt chaotic and below standard. After being a repeat guest for years, this experience has put me off staying at Ace again. There are other hotels in Sydney that are more consistent, attentive and better maintained. Not to mention cheaper with more amenities.nnCan’t wait for the follow up response here where I’m again made to feel as though the issue was resolved and they did everything they could by crediting my $100 parking for a $1500 stay. This is not enough for a 5 star hotel.
For a hotel that markets itself as five-star and is priced accordingly, the overall experience was disappointing and did not deliver reasonable value for money.nnFrom the start, the check-in process felt cursory and disengaged. There was no warm welcome, no clear explanation of hotel facilities, and little sense of hospitality one would expect at this level. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this set the tone for the stay.nnThe property itself feels oddly empty and impersonal, with empty hallways and rooms that appear poorly thought through from a user-experience perspective. The room layout is particularly problematic: the entry essentially functions as the bathroom, with the toilet and shower lacking proper separation or a fully closing door. Practical details seem to have been overlooked; power sockets placed too close to the bed leave insufficient space for adapters and easy plugging/unplugging, which is inconvenient for international travelers.nnSeveral cost-cutting measures are also very noticeable. Basic amenities fall below expectations for a hotel of this category, including extremely thin toilet paper, no bidet, and no toilet brush. On top of that, the hotel applies significant surcharges on all payments: 10% on Sundays and 15% on public holidays, which feels excessive and poorly justified, especially given the overall level of service and amenities.nnWhile the hotel clearly relies on its unique and retro interior design to attract bookings, aesthetics alone do not compensate for shortcomings in comfort, service, and attention to detail. The experience gives the impression of a property under financial pressure, economizing wherever possible while maintaining premium pricing.nnIn short, this hotel does not live up to its five-star claim. There are several better options available in the same price range that offer superior service, more thoughtful design, and a stronger overall guest experience.
