A beautiful hotel and pub which is awesome to visit when in Russell. However my family won’t be back in a hurry for the restaurant. $40 for what was meant to be a slow cooked pork belly, the pork was tough and not slow cooked at all! Our mains came out too fast still having an entree. My sons kids meal - butternut risotto was tasteless. The staff were lovely and I provided feedback. Next time we’ll just have a pint to enjoy the view.
We had a delicious seafood meal here. We ate a little later than most, after 8pm, so the crowds had gone, but the service showed no sign of easing off. The decor was traditional pastiche, which was fun.Service: 4/5
The location and views is simply sensational. The restaurant was the disappointing aspect. A guest in our party was served raw chicken for their entree. We got an apology from the waitress not her fault at all but really the chef should have come out with his tail between his legs and put things right. I think the restaurant relies on its spectacular location to get by. I hope one day the food can match up to it.
It was our first visit to the Duke of Marlborough Hotel. Its a great place for family, nice atmosphere and view, beautiful food, and amazing service. Kids menu has a variety of options, and the portions are very generous. We liked the Duck leg and Roasted brisket pho. Well cooked and very delicious. Thank you.
Lovely, peaceful, historical location. Great building. Our room was clean and tastfully decorated and bed was comfortable. The food tasted average but was nicely presented. The cleaners were happy, friendly and cheerful ...more so than the reception staff who were not that welcoming upon arrival.
I had two very different experiences here. I booked in for dinner back in September with my daughters, where we had a fantastic evening and enjoyed all of our three courses. Our waiter at the time was superb, ensuring our drinks were replaced with every course and asking us how our meals were. It was a very positive experience. I was so impressed that I booked in again for my husbands 50th birthday, our room was lovely, beautiful decor appeared newly renovated. The bed was comfortable, the shower amazing. Our dine in experience unfortunately was disappointing as the waiting staff were all over the place, we sat for about 15 minutes before being asked if we'd like a drink, our meals came out after finishing our drinks, we along with other diners were trying to make eye contact with the waiting staff to get another drink. A diner next to us had to go up to the bar to get her and her partner a glass of wine - this was a shame to see as the food was lovely. We both enjoyed all that we ordered. Would of been a more enjoyable experience to be offered drinks with our courses, this is an issue that could be easily resolved.
Location - beautiful. Building and decor - beautiful. Staff - great. Food - Overpriced, tasteless and disappointing. Duck leg was fatty, orange risotto was bland, didn't taste orange. Titi boil up was disappointing...Titi the size of a 50c piece, small bacon rib and slither of pork. No watercress to be seen. Fried bread was average, didn't have the authentic taste. However the seafood chowder was good. We felt it was over rated, relying on the name, history and location. Would not go back.
A busy spot so worth having some patience to get a table. We came two days as really enjoyed it. Views are gorgeous across the bay. Lots of good food options. Can recommend trying a few things rather than just opting fir the mains. Across the two days, we did a few of the appetisers sashimi, fried bread, heirloom tomatoes sides cauliflower, salad, roasted potatoes and fish n chips.
My friend and I were bridesmaids at a wedding held at the duke of Marlborough! And we just want to say a big thank you to Richard John Doe. Richard was an absolute legend and always offered to help us whether it was getting glasses of water when we were frazzled, finding scissors for us for the bride’s dress, putting our high heels behind the counter so we could dance or explaining all of the portraits on the duke of Marlborough walls to us and our partners! Thank you for your kindness, jokes, and all of your help : A big shout out to shiva for the best cocktails and all of the kind waiters serving drinks at the wedding. You made the wedding even better!
Recommend this restaurant to everyone who travel to Bay of Islands. A good place to chill after a-day of driving or playing. They have fresh seafoods, good wine and nice view of the sea and sunset. Will definitely come again.
