"The Gables Restaurant is the oldest Restaurant in New Zealand, built 1847, on whalebone foundations. The Gables is situated on the Russell Waterfront, offering spectacular views of the sunset across the water throughout the year. The Gables prides itself on using local, sustainable produce. Offering local seafood, oysters, and New Zealand meats. We also have a wide selection of New Zealand wines and beers.Current owners Robert and Jenny Loosley bought the building in 1980 and hold a great collection of old articles and documents related to its chequered history, including its original deed of sale. Booked in for a quick lunch with my partner, on arrival we were asked to wait at the bar for a bit while our table was prepared, and for this we were compensated with drinks on the house! We ordered a selection of small dishes to share and loved all of them. Delicious fresh oysters & cocktails were a favorite. Worth the visit!
A lovely place for a romantic dinner, highly recommended the food we tried but suggest you order off the menu and don't have the "tasting menu" chef's choice. At $69 per person you get better choice ordering per plate. We would have preferred some of the other options. Service was fabulous.Food: 4/5
We thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. Delicious food-fish stands out, it is fully cooked blue nose, duck and pickled appetizers. The service is very good, they have a good wine selection, and there are many local wines to choose from. We were there that night and it was raining, so we had to sit in the house, but it was a good choice to sit outside on a warm summer night... the view was beautiful.
Most standout meal we have had in some time. All facets of the evening were exceptional: the food, the wine, the ambience, service and the view. An evening to be remembered. If you love quality food prepared with skill, then try it out
Best place in Russel for something a little more original than the basics offered everywhere else. Staff efficient and friendly, menu short but interesting. Always seemed to have seats when other less appealing restaurants were full, I can’t see any reason why that should be.
Had dinner here last night the waiter is very friendly and welcoming. The fire was going and gave off great warmth. This is the oldest restaurant in New Zealand has been open since the whaling times and is built on whale bones. We ended up sharing three entrees and it was very nice. Just the right amount as one tends to eat a lot when on holiday. Recommend cost $$$
Lovely place. Great atmosphere, service and food. Definately share the main course between two of you - it's plenty big enough!Food: 5/5
food fantastic as always- the pineapple is so good. Parfait bit weird on the blue corn tortilla, needs more tortilla or maybe cornbread. the picanha is replaced with sirloin - still dang fine, But I missed the picanha. Fish with the fish & chips as good as if you have just caught it. Strawberry lycee cocktail something else. Love the venison - the tartare a standout. First time we haven’t tipped here. Kind of a snobby waitperson - hmmm maybe us kiwi dinners not good enough. Did see a cheerful wait person just not ours. Door staff lovely.
Gables/John’s is the best food in town. Simple food done well and amazing cocktails. Went there twice in 2 days.
Awesome food. Awesome service. Awesome soundtrack. Awesome drinks.Food: 5/5
